Sorry if this is the wrong section to post this topic..
first off, let me say hey!
just re signed up.. used to be on here about 5 years back, and I am just getting back into the scene..
Well, my question is where do you start with producing..
I have been into hardcore since picking up united dance vol2 on cd in 1995.. have tons of dj experience from pirate radio etc.. but what i would love to do is start producing..
only i have no idea where to begin..
i love the old fourbeat styles from the mid 90's but would love to fuse that together with the synths of todays modern hardcore.. what software do you use though..
ill be totally honest i got no production experience at all, but everyone has to start somewhere!
where did you guys start out and what would you suggest for me..
I was talkin to ramos (top bloke!) earlier today via myspace and all he suggested to get in a studio.. that is a great idea but i have no studio experience so i would need to know how to use the equipment etc.. lol
might sound daft, but i can think of no better place to ask such a question than on here!
so where do i start..
i have had a dabble with a few programs on my pc ( avoiding cheese such as the ejay series ) i have been using midi and programs such as reason and rebirth.. but they are not givin me the hardcore sound im after there more sort of synth/trance orientated!
suggestions/advice/oppinions would be really welcome .. and i hope you guys can help me get the ball rolling! :D

O.k, all i can suggest is if you've not had any experience or college training on this just mess about, learn how to make the basic step sequence of beats, snares, & hits ect, then learning the basic structure of you're desired genre and then making a basic track from start to finish, just to grab a feel.
Then start to improve up on it, trawl around the net find you're self some site that can help and get help from members or posts (www.hardcoreproducer.com) i think, check that out it comes in handy.
Selected your desired category in the genre and then listen to some tracks on the category listen to the FX and the structure of it.
You will learn you're basic E.Q and other things like that all the way through, also asking questions on here and learning how you're software works is handy.
Hope this helps, if any one knows better correct me where im wrong. =) (i skim read you're post so if i missed something then im sorry.)

If you get into a studio as Ramos suggested you won't need to know how to use the equipment as there's
usually an engineer on hand to help.
It'll cost you though but it's probably the quickest way to learn the basics.

One of the best things you can do is learn music theory :) Less and less people have a good knowledge of it these days! That's assuming your interested in writing music and not engineering it, if you want to learn to engineer then of course you can disregard that :)

First you should ask yourself how you wanna start.
Would you rather pick up a free/trial version software and have a go at it with some tutorials... or through guidance like taking up a college coarse or getting into a studio and having them take you through the steps. The latter of coarse is if your more serious as it will cost you some cash.
You are still a little wet behind the ears so you will have to play around in the shallow end before you take your first dive into the deep waters. My suggestion would be to find either a college coarse or studio time so you REALLY know what its like before you find yourself too deeply invested with your time and money.

thanks for all the suggestions..
I think we have a studio here in Hull, where i live, but i dont think its up to much.. I might have a word with the local college see if there are any night courses etc i may be able to do!!
I have got sum basic software, such as reason, sound forge, rebirth etc.. but i really am after the oldskool 4 beat sytle from about 95/96 all the stuff like bust a new jam, harmony, dj's in effect, imagination, life force generator etc..
wish me luck!!

heya - good luk with making your tunes
il tell you how i started see if it gives you any ideas
started with drag n drop software - where you use premade loops and mix em together - you can get a good idea of how to build up tracks with out having to engineer all the sounds/synths etc
then when that gets too limiting, you want to write your own melodies/ make your own kicks etc - move to a sequencer - cubase, cakewalk, fruityloops - and start learning it and how to make your tunes from scratch using vsti's and samples and fx
you can start using presets, then fiddle around with everything - learn what does what - work out what sounds you like
toodles
:)

Hey mate,
I have been ****** around with producing for the last 2 years.
I think the first thing you need to do is get a copy of Fruity 6 or 7. This program is grate for learning.
Have a play around with it and get use to using the program a lit.
To get that hardcore sound you need to have some sample pack cds for example Vengeance Essential Clubsounds Vol 1 and 2 and search on the net for some synths. I find the best V-station and Nexus.
Dont expect to be boshing out wicked tunes straight away as it takes years of practice but if you have the passion you can do it.
Hope this help
Check out my tunes myspace.com/jamesstanhopemusic and let me know what u think...
