not sure samples are the way to go ????

have you played with the piano roll ?

different vst synths like z3ta & Vanguard will help get the hardcore sound

tbh i've never used reason b4 but i'm guessing it's no different to any other sequencer....

correct me if i'm wrong

No need for VST's making the percussion for the tune realy, it's all about time scales Mark, get them correct and you will be fine, making you're own samples is a bonus but using others is o.k, Google what you need help with, theirs alot of places out there to help you.

I dont use samples much at all =P
But it's not really the best way to learn, using samples. What do you reall ymean like a beat and bassline. Usually the basslines in hardcore are a square wave bass. The way i like to make em is : Use 3 oscs, each a square wave, 1 will full vol, 2nd with half, last with full. And played offbeat. Add compression and eq, hope the eq will get the bass frequency right without ****ing with the beats. As for the kicks and stuff, i could explain how to make them here but you may as well just use samples.

Right ill just tell you the structure usually. Make sure the kick is a hard trance one, a real hard one. I hope you know what 4/4 is lol. Make sure the bass follows the kick offbeat, and is pretty bassy and low, but not too low!!! (C3 for me on fl studio). And the open hats should be played off beat, do what you want with the closed ones, they dont matter as much. Its actually quite simple to get a hardcore beat. How long have you been producing lol?

I agree with you in that samples arent a very good way to learn. Your missing a whole chaper on production we call "synthesis".

Id disagree with you by saying basses are typically square waves and on C3 in fl. Sure some bass is square, but lots of basses are actually combinations of lots of different waveforms. Only using square waves gives you a pretty generic sound every time. Also i think C3 is pretty freaking low. If i had a C as a root note for bass it would go on C4. But again that also depends on the actual bass in question. C3 is probably typically too low though....

You probably cant make it sound like hardcore because hardcore is more than a kick drum and bass and percussion. The hardest part about hardcore kick and bass is making them 'sit' right. Whack a kick drum on C5 along with the bassline. One bar should look like this:

-_-_-_-_

assuming - are kick drums and _is bass.

hope that helped.

yeah, at 170 bpm with that kick and bass following offbeat, that should sound hardcore, but you gotta make sure you have the right kick. @ the basses, i just did it in preference =D i love square wave basses, not squares, tha cheesy shit, just the hard square wave basses, sometimes i mix with a smooth wave to get a more bassier sound.
