So, I was bored and making music the other day, when I decided to sample a rave classic. Picking randomly, I decided that the SL2 classic would be the right choice. I began sampling, then realized that just doing a remix would be possible because of the mostly bare vocals. So, several hours of work later, here's a somewhat finished (it's a little rough around the edges, but pretty much everything is in place) file of the remix. If you've got anything to say, even if it's just "pretty cool", please say it, and all criticism/advice is appreciated.

Here you go!

Enjoy!

Update 06-07

Just updated the song. Added some smoother transitions through the song, made a bigger build, and fattened up the 303 with some distortion.

overall though, that's really very good.

I like it. The structure is pretty good, but the it sounds pretty simple in terms of production. It would be better with a new engineer, because the instruments all sound pretty simple. Also, it progresses in a weird way, and doesn't have any real build-ups.

This isn't to say it's bad, just noticing certain things here and there.

I like the work you did with the vocal samples, but I have to ask if it was a real acapella or if it just came from a track. Because I swear I can hear a muffled kick in there that slightly clashes with your kick.

Cool work anyway.

The best part is the dnb styled break and the part right after.

Yeah, the sounds are rather simple, but the intent was to capture a more oldschool sound. I noticed the progression was a bit weird too, but I'm not really sure how to make it flow any better.

I did get it from the track, but instead of an EQ-ed out kick, you're probably hearing the punchy synth sound from the original, which I wasn't able to EQ out without ditching the vocals as well. And by the way, did you think the 303 at the end sounded a little bit thin? I can't shake the feeling that there's some sort of warmth that's lacking, and I've got no idea how to add it.

^^Yeah, I did notice the 303 sounded thin. I don't really know either, perhaps layering it...?

Hmm. I'm gonna try some layering and distortion. Will report back with update tomorrow (I've already fixed up the transitions between song sections a little bit, and I've added something of a build when the piano first comes in.)

doing this as i listen... so... bear with the awful formatting!

i don't really like the intro that much, it's just kinda strange...not a fan.

the hihat is pretty loud

maybe add a little something before the vocal comes in? it's pretty abrupt, not too keen on that

vocal mashup is pretty funny, strange but i think i like it

the synth that just came in around 1minute is really nice

pianos at 1:30ish seem a little flat sounding?

dnb break is really incredible - wouldn't change anything about that!

303 like you said is still a little too thin and bleepy sounding, sounds a bit superficial (if that makes sense? not really sure how to describe it!)

overall, i really like it.

Here goes:

I like the general concept, you have some great ideas and obviously some talent.

IMO drop the 4/4, go with the break beat, d&b route, it's going to fit the track much better than any 4/4 could do. You have a nice d&b break there, don't waste it.

For the most part I think the sound levels are all over the place as too is the sound quality in places. The track needs more build ups in the way of cymbals and drum rolls, some more breaks in the drum pattern.

I like the way you've done the vocal sample and the piano sample, I think the piano needs thickening up in the way of sound, it needs to be more at the forefront of the track.

One thing I did pick up on that I really think is great but you didn't use it as much as you could is the slowed down sample at the very end of the track, you couls use this as an epic buil dup to the main break down if done right.

Nice advice! Not so sure about making it a breaks track (wouldn't know what to do without the off beat bass and hoover), and I really can't improve the mixdown, because it sounds just fine on my crap-tastic speakers, but I'm working on more drum fills and beefing up the pianos (just added some reverb and it sounds quite nice now). Thanks for the advice everyone! Updates tomorrow, and even sooner if someone finds a guide, thread, or any resource that would help with making intros that don't suck.

for the intro

just have the kick for 4 bars, then bring in the hihat, then 4 bars later the bass, or something such as that. at least try that out (though it doesn't have to be in that particular order obviously!).

I usually do that, but after listening to more tracks, I realized that my intros sounded really boring and sparse.

Saving up for some decent monitors, so there will be a victory on that front...eventually. :D

Acid Pro 5.0 for arranging, sample manipulation (it's mostly samples). KarmaFX for the 303. (And Distroyr for the 303 distortion) TN303 for the bass. (The TN303 is definitely the best 303 fake I've ever heard, if you can manipulate the knobs correctly. Do a search for it on Youtube and you'll see some great demos of it, and you'll be able to message him from youtube and get the download link.)
