I dont get why Americans have to put themselves into groups. Jocks, Goths, Cheerleaders, Geeks 'ravers' etc. Obviously I only know what its like from films, tv and forums.

When you share somthing in common with another its usually labeled to more easily refer to it. Its not an American thing, its just the natural way of how things progress.
Once narrow-minded prejudice pricks get involved and start stereo-typing everyone is when that "label" starts to take form.

woah woah woah.....that ain't just american kid. I see all those groups of people in england as well. apart from maybe cheerleaders, not so many of those around.....shame really. also theres nothing wrong with wanting to be part of a collective. oh yeah and i like the pics, looks like you guys had fun in the sun!

I wouldn't say it's a US thing so much as it's a teenager thing. Identities are hard to come by when you're a kid, so we find a group we can identify ourself by. Although the US, from what I've gathered, is a lot louder and flashier about our identities than most other cultures (I guess that's what you get for having a rather long individualist tradition.)
