Get it out to as many labels as you can! If your feling brave you could press a small amount and distribute it yourself... Good luck with that though ;)

Before sending it off, you should send a copy to yourself by recorded delivery in a sealed envelope.

Why bother... Wouldn't stand up in court. The files on your computer are much better evidence.

Actually recorded delivery is a signed official document because the postal stamp and date is registered officially. Filedates on your computer can easily change.

Yes but you can send an unsealed envelope to yourself in the post... It wouldn't stand up in court.

Yes it will stand up in court.
Not with a good lawyer, and lack of funds!
Lets face it, in the music industry - YOUR F*CKED! Recorded mail isn’t going to stand up to anything!
Anyways... Are you a rock & roll Musician or an Electronic one?
Electronic - fantastic..
That means there’s no cost for studio time, engineering ect!
(as you've done all this yourself… right?)
So now you have a finish & polished mp3 and...
…you want a record label for what exactly?
The only thing left on the list of a record labels job is distribution... in which they will earn a nice PHAT royalty off your music... honestly mate, why bother?
We’re in the digital age now... the internet is taken over... so be brave and DIY it!
FACT: Electronic music is full of independent labels by independent artists... why? Its simple logic... we do all the hard work ourselves to get the finished recording... All we need now is:
-
- A market to reach too... (Market research, publicity, print media ect)
A place to sell it (online shop, dealers & retailers ect) -
Also, most electronic labels are producers starting there own anyways (Simply to sell there own music)
So therefore, you'd have to be something really special for them to sign you...
With some good research... it isn't to hard to achieve on your own!
And its what MOST electronic artists decide to do (in the long run, it works out cheaper)
Sorry, but its just the way it works in this industry...
I've seen alot of very talented artists try there hardest to get signed, and inturn just get there faith crushed! - and i'll be honest, it pisses me off how f*cking stupid some people can be!
Just avoid all that mate... its common sense!
Do your research... and get into music business!
All I can say is: Welcome to Electronic Music...
You spend years & years as it is, learning & perfecting how to be an electronic artist in the first place (its not as simple as picking up an instrument now is it).
Only to then down the line when you have finally mastered your style, learn that you've only just begun...
Now you've got to sit down and devote more time and energy (and even money) to study yet MORE stuff - only this time to do with business, marketing and the industry you involved in!
Yep - welcome to electronic music [thinking negative?]
The only form of music that rewards you for what you put into it (100% YOU!) [think possative!]
Hint of advice: START NETWORKING ASAP!
i.e Get your arse on myspace and start communicating with people (you’d be amazed how friendly some people in the industry are!)

If it really came down to proving authorship:
Presumably you've kept the original sequencer files (Cubase/FL Studio/Reason etc) and that should shut anyone up who disputes the track is yours.

It doesn't (certainly not in the UK anyway). People have tried and failed, I remember reading an article on it. Can't find the link :(
You have to take it to get a proper copyright, it's the only way. Like Sim says tho' you'd prob' still get pissed on from a tree.
