Ok so i got me a new laptop that i am going to be using for SSL, but that gave me the problem with my old laptop.
As i only used this for SSL i had done a clean format of xp and never bothered installing drivers for anything that wasn't needed. ie. bluetooth, wireless etc.
So as this is going to be the laptop i use to do whatever on now i formatted it and started installing all the programs and what not that i need.
Its a Dell Inspiron 6400 the driver page is http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INSPIRONI6400/E1505&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid= The problem i have and am hoping someone could help me with is connecting to the internet, i can connect to the wireless network no probelm at all but when i have the ethernet cable plugged into the machine it is not allowing me to connect to the internet! This has got me puzzled i have checked the driver page and cant find what i need or maybe i just keep over looking something, but if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated! Cheers

some advice:
try not to jam the cord in and force it to pick it up, as network connector is attached to motherboard
have you tried another cord?

Is LAN turned on from Network settings*? My laptop often disables it every now and then for no apparent reason. Do you even see LAN from network settings? If you dont, then you need drivers for it.
If its ok to all above. Then from Network Settings, right click LAN and choose properties*, choose "internet protocol*" and click properties* (or advanced). From there check that it gets the IP address automatically.
* I use Finnish windows, so those might be under diffrent but similar names.
