upfront=new
freeform is more... free formed...? hard to describe, has hard trance type elements, think nu energy
happy hardcore is just a generic term that means different things to different people. i much prefer uk hardcore, as happy hardcore sounds can sound a bit...gay. i still refer to mid to late 90s cheese and early 2000s vocal stuff as happy hardcore... it's really up to you though. it's called happy hardcore to differentiate it from the dutch hardcore.
it's all a big confusing mess really, no one's actually "right", and it all comes down to individual opinions,etc. it gets even more confusing when you look at it globally, and then it all just becomes retarded because the dutch/french/etc all have their own ideas of what hardcore is, blah blah etc. i could write an essay on this, but.. hopefully it helped

My understanding of freeform is how it changes in form when you listen to it and doesn't particulary follow one style.

Upfront - happy hardcore with big trance synths, poppy vocals (usually female), and lots of uplifting (if a tad cheesy) melodies. Think fast epic trance.
Freeform - like it says, free form. Anything goes so long as it's fast and has a 4 beat. This often means heavily psy/hard/progressive trance influenced stuff (usually being softer and more prog. trance influenced in its early days), with loads of complex sounds, evolving 303's, and a way more trippy vibe. The Finnish freeform scene takes this to its extreme, and often pushes the tempo into the 180 range. On the other hand, there's more ravey, bouncy stuff, with lots of hoovers, rave stabs, and lots of oldschool flavor. But of course, freeform is allowed to do pretty much anything, so if there's an idea you can have and still call it hardcore, you can do it in freeform.

would have to argue with this - future dance, tnc, and other such labels are easily classified as upfront and don't have trance synths or poppy vocals. i really think that all upfront means is new.
not all modern uk hardcore has moved towards trance synths and pop vocals, and all upfront really means is modern.
feel free to disagree obviously, i just don't think any of this is really set in stone and i want to get that point across :D
