Dumb question, I know, but me and a DJ from Atlanta were talking about HHC music, and I said that in some USA scenes, When it says "Hardcore' on the flyer, it automatically means HHC/UK Hardcore...And he was saying that when it says "Hardcore", it means 'true" hardcore, especially overseas....
I was like...I dont think the UK really went by the Happy Hardcore acronym, they just called it Hardcore. And I told him that at Hardcore events, it's usually the vocal stuff unless specified "Gabber" or "Freeform" beside the DJ, but Hardcore typically means the happy vocal stuff in the UK.
To me, "Hardcore" is a cath-all term for everything from Dnb/Jungle to Happy/UK Hardcore/Gabba/Freeform....but what would just "Hardcore" be?

If a flyer says hardcore in the UK it could be any sort, best off just looking at the line up to see what stuff you're likely to hear. 'Hardcore' over here would basically be everything from cheese to gabber and everything in between. Whereas in Holland or something, hardcore would just be what we'd likely call gabber...

See, thats sorda what I was trying to tell him, its all about what the lineup provides, but "Hardcore" can range from anywhere.

if it's stateside, most of the time it means hardcore techno & gabber
if it says hardcore overseas I guess it would depend on the country...but it could mean just about any form of 'hardcore' from 89 to today

True Hardcore, to me, is what people now call "oldskool".
But yeah, in reality, it covers everything.

Here is the reply from my DJ friend:
"True, Happy core is still a major part of the hardcore community (the best selling as well). But if you say hardcore it really means more what Omar Santana plays."

I was like...I dont think the UK really went by the Happy Hardcore acronym, they just called it Hardcore.
The study of words. There's just no universal word. For instance "fanny" could mean someone's buttocks in the USA, but a woman's private in UK. That's a bit crude but I'm just demonstrating that it's the same word but very different thing. There is no right or wrong. Where they are... that word works.
There was indeed hardcore (and happy hardcore) terms used in the UK during the old days but it meant, in England at least, breakbeat music. So, if this was 1992 you'd be talking about 130BPM breakbeat as hardcore. Now it's not. It's like the word "Britain". Historically it referred to Welsh/Celtic people. Now, that definition has changed and means something different.
Also things (music/DJs) were quite localised to countries and not global due to the internet, which is important, so there was not all this mixture of different communication going on. It was not that much of a big deal what things were called when you were drawing silly crowds any week at gigs.
