Just for my knowledge is power, I'm just grabbing up everything I can around me before I actually get started on producing. I have a basic question just to clarify.

What's the "usual" structure of a hardcore song (Intro, Buildup,Breakdown, Chorus etc) ?

I'm sure that this can vary a lot with different types and producing styles but I'm just trying to get a grasp on what I'm trying to start. Thanks

maj

Dont hold yourself to a structure, it will limit your productions.

As long as it flows, sounds good and stays interesting that's all that's important. Obviously keep in mind it will need to be mixed!

Just remember to build around 8 or 16 bar phrases. Something has to happen every 8 or 16 bars, and everything else can come naturally. As for the usual structure, it's:

intro (make sure there's about 30 seconds of mixable stuff. Ambient intros are great, but you need something to use for mixing in the set) -> buildup -> breakdown -> drop (main section) -> second breakdown (shorter than the first breakdown) -> second drop (winding down) -> outro (also needs 30 or so seconds of mixable stuff.)

I would say that's only a rule for those who havn't mastered structure to the point where they can't make anything longer work. Once you have, it's a big limitation really and will lead to pretty boring tunes (unless the melody is specifically good).
Although that isn't to contradict you Pope, it's just good to know you don't have to limit yourself.

Fortunately i've realised that people saying stuff needs to be a certain way to sound good aren't neccesarily right, but not everyone else has so it's good to point out what is purely guidance and what isn't :)
If something sounds good to you but differs from what is normal, stick with it, because the people who break the boundaries are the same people that push music forward, remember that.
Doing something that's exactly the same as what everyone else does, is at best just the same as what everyone else does!

True. There's definitely ways to make other phrasing methods work, but the standard 8-16 is what's most familiar to people and, in general, is the easiest to pull off with melody based EDM genres like hardcore and trance.
