what's the area like around south london; like below St. James Park, bit north of Croydon, and north west of Bromley...
basically i'm asking if anyone knows anything about Camberwell or atleast around it...
i was accepted into the University of the Arts: Camberwell College of Arts and I'm from New York so..I'm just curious. Been to London this past summer, just didn't have a chance to have a look at Camberwell..

mmmm.....
There are good bits and bad bits, same as anywhere else, and areas that you simply don't go anywhere near after dark
....and some that you don't go anywhere near at all.
I'm reluctant to mention the no-go areas because even they have their positive side. (Kennington, Stockwell, Brixton, Clapham)
The best advice I can think of is to ask when you get there. Don't ask anyone 'arty' because in my experience they're too far up themselves to know what's going on in the real world.
Ask the Porter or the cleaner or the Receptionist, someone like that.
London is a safer place than New York but don't be complacent.
If you can afford it, Dulwich is OK, but it's south of the areas you specified. http://www.ionosphere.co.uk/images/SW%20London.jpg

Yeah it's not the nicest part of London, but as you know it's well linked up to the underground so getting about should be a doddle. It's not as scary as most people make it out to be, even Brixton is acceptable most of the time, even at night. I often go to the Carling acedemy there and havea few drinks in the pub before and after, it's alright if you watch yourself.

man... I feel like I live in the safest city in the world being down here in Canberra, Australia. You can do anything, walk around anywhere and not really be worried.
I know this only really applies for Australians but really its the same advice for everyone, check out http://www.smarttraveller.gov.au for some good info. Its a damn good website

i find it funny how people have this perception that new york is such a dangerous city, where everyone is ready to shoot a gun. but that's totally not the case. i felt that new york is like london except that the people here, are wayyy more warm and friendly-like.
you just have to be aware of your surroundings and have common sense and you'll be alright.
i may be a bit dense just cos i don't really ever think areas are as bad as people make it to be..but if you're gonna tell me there's like loads of 'chavs' that go about chasing people with broken bottles for fun, then i'll be worried.
so when you say it's not the nicest place, what do you mean by that? besides regarding to it's safety. is it like really dark? dingy? boondoxs?

I doubt Ionosphere meant it in that sense Squishy, just that London's crime statistic's will be lower, thus safer, then NY.
I know that college is one of the best in the country and also know the area has some bad spots. But as a student, I doubt you'll be walking around much late at night on your own. Not the greatest place in London but nowhere near the worst either.
