I want to run one set of speakers on an amp and one active sub through the master output on my mixer, would it be possible without creating an amp chain? The mixer has two types of output sockets for each output (standard jack and XLR I think).

If the jack output isnt for the booth then you should be able to use that and it will be adjusted by the same master vol as the xlr output.

If you cant do that you could always just buy some xlr splitter cables, i dont think they are very cheap to buy so you might want to look at making them yourself (pretty easy as long as you can solder)

Nah it's not master and booth each have jack and XLR. Couldn't see why it would be a problem but didn't want to shell out for a sub and find out I couldn't connect it.

I bought some Bower & Wilkins 686 speakers in the end because the sound quality really impressed me but... What I want to do is cut the bass on these and Let a reasonable sub do all the grunt work so I can max these out on the mid/treble production and get more volume if I'm having some people over for a session and that :D.

The 686's are pretty loud for what they're are anyway but It's always good to have it that bit louder when ya havin a proper sesh aye.

Here is the speakers I got:-

Expensive considering the size but worth the $.
