I guess Digital DJing isn't as respected for some reason, but I'm trying to find what program is best for happy hardcore DJing using my laptop. I'm currently using VirtualDJ without external control of any kind, and am in the process of buying Ableton 6.
I am aiming to get turntables with timecoded vinyl, and an external mixer to control the files, but I don't know what is best to buy. I am looking into Torq's products (http://www.torq-dj.com/products/main_Torq_conectiv.php), but again, not sure if thats good. If someone could link me to some good programs/turntables/a good mixer, that'd be tight. I want the vinyl control feel, so I don't want any lame CD control things or anything.

I'd suggest using Traktor as a base.
You can get a good feel for how to mix and how to control a track and what not.
Then, the next step is get a good set of turntables, and then use Traktor scratch and have vinyl control.
Or, alternatively, you could use SSL [Serato Scratch Live]. Essentially, you'll need to develop DJ'ing skill either way, whether or not you have actual turntables.

I've got beatmatching and stuff down, I'm just looking for something more powerful and with more control than VirtualDJ. I'll lookin into Traktor.
Can any turntables be hooked up as external controllers?

Hate to break it to you but beat matching in a computer program and beat matching on a set of TT's aint the same......................................
You've got beat matching down on a program that implements the "automix" lol
Now Serato or Traktor Scratch thats a tough choice persoally i would choose Serato, serato might lack in some features but it is the most stable and its the industry standard for a reason!
Torq on the other hand i would strongly recommend not using, i have only saw this a limited amount of times but when i have saw this in use it resulted in audio dropouts and the blue screen of death, the future updates could well fix this but as it stands now i would not touch it:)

I think he means the autosync, which beatmatches for you. I've practiced beatmatching without autosync, and read up on how to do it with actual turntables. If he IS referring to the automix feature, that feature is like ridiculously horrible for mixing, and no one uses it.
I can get by without that, and from the features I've seen on Final Scratch, it implements similar features. But yeah, definitely getting Final Scratch, but I still don't know how to hook up turntables/mixer to my laptop. Do I use a pre-amp to do that? /is a noob
EDIT: I found something to hook it up to my laptop, and its 500$. I've mostly got my setup planned out now, just gotta wait for the cash flow. I might post it here tomorrow and have you guys tell me if anythings wrong with it. The entire setup is about $1200 USD, and includes 2 turntables, a mixer, Technics headphones, and VirtualVinyl by Numark.

Say it aint so.....................
Hope that was a mistake on your part and that your refering to traktor scratch because there was a final scratch before that project was scraped and final scratch 2 was released, now stanton and N.I no longer update these, both were piss poor!
Serato -> Traktor Scratch -> Torq ------------------------------------------> Final scratch
anyway.......
Hooking the mixer to the laptop, i use serato but all are simliar in idea. When you purchase any of these program and get a external sound card (they will call this something else ie SL1, scratch amp) the rca cables from your decks go into this them rca from there go into your mixer. Like so http://www.rane.com/swf/sslsetup.swf

not a good deal at all that mixer blows, the turntables are terrible, the headphones are OK but Pioneers are better and anything Numark is not only far from industry standard, it also usually sucks get a pair of used technics 1200s for 500-600$ US on ebay get a good mixer like this one: http://djdeals.com/vestaxVMC185XL.htm for 240$ get M-Audio Torq if you can't afford Traktor Skratch or Serato (~300-400$) get Pioneer HDJ-1000 headphones for 100$

from personal experiance id have to suggest not getting those pioneer headphones, they are very prone to breaking. the technics or sennys are a better option imo

Alright, That's good information, thanks a lot. I couldn't find technics for cheap like that, for some reason using ebay didn't even cross my mind.

The Technics ones sound like shit, I own a pair
all low end, no highs
The Pioneers are the best sounding I've used so far - and I've owned every popular brand so far
-Stantons are trash (they sound bad AND break)
-Sonys sound OK but they break (I personally don't like the sound but it's better than many)
-Technics sound like shit and are heavy
-Ultrasones sound like tin cans no matter what anybody tells you
-Sennheisers sound good but the cups are too small and I find it hard to do one eared stuff and move them quickly when I'm doign 3 deck stuff
-Skullcandy look cool but suck
etc.
I've had the Pioneers for nearly a year and no sign of breaking - so far they're lasting as long as my Technics and Stanton 2000s (the 3000s broke in like 1 month, 2000s last a while)
pretty much all headphones break though, I've broken every pair listed above (Canadian winter + plastic = brittle)
DO NOT BUY HEADPHONES ON EBAY, THEY'LL BE FAKE

they're "fine" but the hgihs aren't prominent enough IMO
it gets very TIRING to listen to them when you're mixing and you can't hear the percussion as well because they're buried in this muddy bassy mess
trash.
I also have to crank the volume on the mixer alot less with pretty much any other headphones, which is nice cause it saves my ears when I'm playing out

I just bought M-Audio Xponent a couple months ago. I sold my decks a couple years back so I really needed something at home to mess around on. It's an excellent budget replacement or just a nice digital setup. The faders feel a little cheap, but at the same time very solid. The jog dial can also be adjusted so that it feels as rugged as the Pioneer CDJ's. The Torq software that it comes with looks kinda cheap, but it's really powerful and easy to use. Overall, I'm really happy with it.
