Just a thought that popped up into my mind while sitting on the bus home yesterday... When a track says it's, for example, "Hixxy vs Styles", what exactly does it mean? Does it mean that Hixxy does the majority of the track and then mid-track the track totally changes and Styles does his own take, contrasting Hixxy's part of the track?

this is all really vague, but generally i find vs is used when an artist takes a commercial track and has their way with it. like you'll see Randomhardcoredj vs Kelly Clarkson - song name. Where the track is taken and used as the base of the new track, but there's no actual connection between the artists.
at least, that's what i think it is! feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

Well, that all really depends.
When it's a production and it says Hixxy vs. Styles, it means they collaborated essentially and is equivalent to Hixxy & Styles.
If it's what Meph is talking about it's equivalent to the hardcore producer's remix of that pop tune.
If it's a DJ set and it's say Hixxy vs. Styles, then it should be a battle set, although often it ends up being a B2B set.

I think it's just a different spin on the "random producer" & "random producer" credit.

theres nothing really set in stone.
feat. usually means a vocalist/guest producer doing little bits.
vs usually means it's totally open. ie the two have just got together and are seeing what's gonna happen.
+ is pretty much the same as above, but a more friendly option.

I thought it was when an artest 'remakes' a track (rather than remixes) like if a Dance track was remxied by a Hardcore producer (meaning it is alot different) it would become a 'verses' or if a remake is remxies itself!

One of the rare times i've actually heard a proper vs isnt even in hardcore lol 'Masif DJ's - Every Day (Steve Hill vs Technikal Mix)' Steve hill's parts mainly hard house'ish and then after break down Technikal kicks in with some kick arse hard trance. Both parts where 100% different from each other. The way it should be.

What happens is they have a big rumble in a wendy house, hitting each other with eels, whoever wins gets to put their name first.

imo a proper versus should be easy to notice. like if the track was cut in half but shared some elements or it can be a battle of synths of question/answer. example ; the question synth plays for 4 bars and then the other producer adds his sound as the answer. talking ...fighting...
micken vs twistedfreq - the great battle , is like that.
