I actually learnt to mix on upfaders and started using a crossfader at a later time (I now mix with whatever fits the situation best) so maybe that's why I don't find it hard to swap between them...
Yeah sounds like you get a raw deal in Canada. Most of the places I play over here are about as underground as you can get (illegal free raves) and are set up on a one off in a field, barn, warehouse, etc. Never hire gear though, always proper stuff that's been fine-tuned and is set-up by people who know exactly what they're doing. It's actually the clubs that tend to have the shit gear, heh. No doubt because they're there for the money not the music.
Yeah, getting a shoddy set-up is always going to limit what you can do. All about the compromise aye.

parties here are great though, and I love playing at them
but I'm definately not surprised when there's something wrong in the DJ booth
I just assumed that since many of the UK events are held in clubs so there's alot of time to set everything up prior to the event

Most of the best parties in the UK aren't setup in clubs :)
If it's someone setting up their own rig in a club though, yeah, you're right.
Saying that though.... People like SV and that clearly don't put in the effort with the sound systems, they're usually set-up so bad :s

That's weird. We don't usually have amazing sound systems here because only clubs can afford them (house/trance clubs)...but we have decent systems. And none of our events are as big as SV.

Funny story, I was DJing a club in Tokyo and that had a vestax hiphop mixer that can reverse the crossfader for scratching, I didn't know about this function (I'm not a hiphop DJ haha) and had to mix the entire set in reverse :)

Haha, silver. Yes, I do mix with the upfaders instead. But I would like to also have access to the crossfader and asked. I noticed this when I submitted a mix and they told me volume was wack, and friend as well told me. So later I learned more about mixers and crap. Then found out it was a "X" curve, etc etc... then went on to mix with upfaders, which isn't that hard.
I guess I can't really cut and do quick changes though, can but would be hard. I need some practice with gain levels though, that crap throws me off.

Gain levels are easy. Stick the track you're bringing in at its fullest point and make sure the db reading is the same as the fullest point of the track that is playing. If you're using a decent mixer the EQ's wont effect the db reading but on a cheaper mixer you may need all the EQ's flat to get a proper reading.

LOL
that's awesome
I've had to play hardcore on rotary house mixers without EQs (just high pass filters)...so annoying.

Yep sure are! I click the setup tab then click autogain on:) One tune out of every hundred or so requires me to tweak the gain (in the software not the mixer) but after the first time it will be stored at that level all ready for the next time i spin the tune

That sounds boring and un-involving. :)
