i can vouch for not needing an external soundcard. ive used my laptop line in / desktop line in and both can record really good quality so long as you set all the levels right
wrong, onboard sound is complete shit compared to a real pro audio card
think whatever you want, you're wrong and anybody with a set of studio monitors and decent hearing will be able to back me up
your statement is complete shit, i have loads of mixes that have been done though onboard soundcard and the quality is no where near complete shit.
a pro audio card will sound mint, granted, but whats the point in spending all that money just for recording mixes when onboard soundcards are fine?
how many people listen to mixes through studio monitors anyway?
spending £60+ on a soundcard just for recording mixes is a complete waste of money IMO
Bit of a turn around from the last thread but i would have to agree with that statement 100%

Because often times onboard soundcards just aren't. I know mine's fine for putting out sound from the main channel (so recording software sets is fine), but recording external sources at levels that don't clip makes the buzzing my shitty soundcard makes completely overpower the entire rest of the input. It's a horrible soundcard, and if I recorded from the input, I'd have everybody commenting on the mix "I couldn't listen to it man. The buzzing was too annoying." You do have a point that you don't necessarily need some high end piece of equipment, but many times the stock soundcard just sucks.
Exactly.
My statement is completely accurate. I said "COMPARED TO PRO AUDIO onboard soundcards will sound like complete shit", which is true 100% of the time.
There are pretty much no pro-level onboard sound cards - they have a signal to noise ratio that's too high and they alter the dynamics of the sound far too much to be good. Will your mixes sound fine when posted on the internet at 128kbps? Sure, if that's all you're doing then go ahead.
If you want your mxies to sound professional you're dreaming if you think onboard sound will suffice. There's a huge difference between by M-Audio 2496 and my Realtek onboard sound. Laptops generally have even worse soundchips.
Like I said, the NOISE level is a problem with onboard sound (signal to noise ratio is too low, there's interference with other components in the PC) and the sound nearly always sounds 'dead' compared to pro-audio.
Basically, it'll sound fine to you until you compare it yourself.

which ever way you word it, you were saying onboard soundcards are rubbish.
i have posted a mix i recorded through an onboard soundcard. its also been reduced to 128kbps from 320kbps. have a listen and see what you think
ive never said i can get professional quality out of onboard soundcards, i said onboard soundcards are fine for recording mixes.
ive got a M-Audio 2496 on one of my pc's and a Edirol FA101 for my laptop which i could use for recording my mixes if i wanted to but i am happy using my onboard soundcard.
you are right to say that if i used one of those soundcards to record a mix it would sound better, but the marginal increase in sound quality it just isnt worth it imo.

have a play with the gain's in the volume control properties first. there is a mic boost feature most of the time, not sure what it will sound like but worth a try. ive had mixes recording through the mic channel on a laptop before and it wasnt too shabby, if you try it first and see what you think you might save yourself some money!
if it doesnt sound as good as you want it to then post up a budget and say if you want usb for firewire and im sure one of us on here will sort your out

Madness. Personally I think the difference in onboard sound and proper studio cards is pretty big. About the same as listening to a cd on a set of decent speakers or a set of crappy cheap ones.

yeah, it's HUGE
unless you don't have great hearing or you don't know how to record properly in the first place
or if you don't have studio monitors, you mgiht not notice as much
but I honestly hate listening to mixes I recorded years ago with onboard sound because they're missing colour

If you could find a laptop with an intergrated sound blaster or something from creative at least you know your getting a sound company brand rather than just a chip. I would check out IBM or Dell, don't go for a tiny laptop, go for something with more features, you will be fine recording with it if you're just doing DJ mixes.

Lower end Pro sound cards aren't expensive, there is no reason you anyone should need to use anything less! If your recording audio then you need that quality.

Yeah im getting a lot of feedback using the mic input so i take it i`ll need an external sound card to sort this. What one do u guys use ive been looking around and some are pretty expensive although ive seen some around £40 - £70 is there any special requirements or will any do like having a usb, gain control ETC. Will an external sound card defo get rid of this feedback???

make sure you get a good one
firewire units are generally MUCH better
this one is cheap and top notch: http://www.presonus.com/inspire1394.html has balanced inputs too! you can also get an edirol usb 2.0 interface if your firewire isn't good on your laptop (many laptops have shitty firewire)
