the old thunderdome series was off the hooks, up until "past, present, future" it was the leading hardcore series here. the ones that came after 2000 went downhill after 4 or 5 of em. Too much mainstream gabber on em.

Mainstream gabber and a perverted scene is what basicly turned me away from hardcore after 8 years of total hardcore addiction.
It's sad...

mainstream gabber is the kind of core you usually here at a standard massive gabber rave in western europe minus any oldskool or more off the beaten track kinda hardcore.
examples of the current mainstream artists are: dj paul, tommyknocker, tha playah, Bass-D & King matthew, Neophyte, T-junction & osiris, the stunned guys, art of fighters, Mad dog, Dj D, Hellsystem, Scott Brown and the likes.

if you want more then just look up any MOH compilation cd's tracklist that was released after 2002. 4/5 of the artists on there will be mainstream gabber.

Well, newstyle gabber tends to be slower and have a lot more emphasis on giant heavily processed kicks. Oldschool stuff is way different. Tends to be faster (though there's quite a few 160bpm tunes too), simpler (just check out the first "gabber" tune, Rotterdam Termination Source - Poing. It's a sound and a distorted 909, and that's it), and way more rave stab/hoover driven, rather than big hardstyle-ish epic melodies. The mixes JSPR posted up on here are an excellent (and huge) intro to oldschool gabber/bouncy techno.
Also check out some of the old stuff (pre 95, usually) stuff from Babyboom, Dwarf, Pengo, Bass Generator, and Rotterdam Records, especially the first three if you want happier melodic stuff.

Edit: and in the interest of whoring myself to the internet, here's a quick little mix of 14 oldschool gabber tracks running from pretty happy stuff to ludicrously dark + distorted. PM for a tracklisting.

to be fair most gabba is mainstream in holland anyways its on the radio & tv & you cant get more mainstream then that can you. that being said iv always liked the dutch stuff & although i like new gabba iv always prefed the older stuff as i find it harder, faster & more raw, but thats just my personal tastes init & some ppl will prefer the newer stuff, after all everyone has diff tastes :o)

ive started to really get into gabber recently. and i like a lot of the dutch, italian stuff, but ive just got one question. why is it so slow? i'd love to play a load of uk hardcore and dutch, italian etc. gabber in the same set but its just too slow. so is that just the way they like their gabber over there?

it never used to be slow, listen to some of the older tunes they were fast, i guess that its just how the scene has progressed over there.

nope, it seems happy hardcore is as good as dead in our country my friend.
gabber parties still pop up here and there but it's like you say, mostly uninspired jumpstyle crap and talentless trance and electro-parties.

other rave-styles are quite common though (acid, goa, psytrance, ebm, breakcore, dnb, etc.)

electronic body music.
very popular in the cybergoth scene.
artists like front 242, leatherstrip, spetsnaz and the likes

you've also got terror EBM (aka aggrotech or Hellectro/Hellektro), which is a more distorted substyle (and one of my favorite electronic styles).
artists like Hocico, Suicide commando, Heimataerde, Aslan action, Tactical Sekt, Insekt, Amduscia, Soman, Agonoize
