hey i just have a quick question. when mixing do u guy find it better if say (being a happy hardcore mix) if you start off with cheese music first and then get into the harder stuff or do u guys do the opposite.

i usually start off with the cheese stuff first but im considering for my next mix to start of with somthing hard and then chesse. but im afraid if i do that the listeners will tune out buy the end.
advice on a way to structure a mix would be welcome.

Yeah, cheesy to hard can be good.

But, it's awesome to keep it really varied. And don't have any hesitations crossing styles. Just make sure you can mix the songs well together.

as above! its nice to have a structured set where it gets progressivly harder but sometimes its nicer to start hard then go cheesy then hard again.

just mess about and do what you think sounds good

IMO, mixing into something harder, heavier, or more complex is a lot easier than mixing into something lighter or more minimal, especially when mixing with a less DJ friendly (well, less fast mixing friendly) genre like hardcore. When mixing from gabber to HHC the kicks are definitely where you have to watch out, considering it tends to sound kind of abrupt to shift from some huge DJ Promo style kick to a punchy hhc kick. I tend to avoid this problem by mixing into the breakdown of the second track (or mixing oldschool stuff with gabber kicks :P).
As far as structure goes, there's really no way of saying what works better. You can mix from gabber to jungle to sped up hardstyle if you want, just so long as it sounds like a cohesive mix.

I find it generally easier to work a crowd starting with lighter/happier music and finishing with hard banging. but if you're just doing a mix on a puter, keep the people guessing but make sure the mix flows nicely.

starting out hard usually frightens most listeners here away...although it is kind of funny when a hardcore dj will come on after a house dj and all the e-tards are frozen in there tracks not knowing what to do....can't dance to it because it's too fast...can't move because they're too f*cked up =p

ive always gone cheesy to hard... not for any particular reason other than thats how i think it works best....

I always go from cheesy vocal hardcore, to something in between then to gabber

Or Commercial dance to hard dance to hardstyle....

i dunno thats just me i guess...

everyone does cheesy to hard

so if you're playing at a rave you can't always do that - you've gotta consider what's on before and after you
