Katz book rox- 'nuff said.
@Ruffage
Srry 'bout the tone, the generalization was a bit uncalled for no doubt.
And I guess my blurbs not the bestest well written mastering walk thru EVAH... but it's not non-factual... that's what I do.. and it works.. at very least for me.. *shrug*
None the less I must assert I know everything there is to know about audio mastering (except those things which I do not know) and I strongly believe one way or another it is possible to produce studio "sounding" quality with a basic home media setup (and the right software ;) .
I think the biggest draw back of the "bedroom superstar" approach would be not having a second set of ears to review the mixdowns..
Most of the producers I've met that rely heavily on outsourced mastering do so because they are looking for a fresh perspective that might catch anything they could have overlooked.
It's not because they can't do it themselves, rather it's a redundant "double check".

I think just work really hard on your mixdown, if something sounds bad there, masterings not gonna help. Id really suggerst having uyour final mix mastered by someone else but of course you can do it at home IF you know waht your doing equipment/software wise and understand the acoustics of your room and how they color the sound.

Its possible to master a track without a proper studio. A friend just graduated as an audio engineer and does all the mastering for his record label at his house. Only thing he runs is Pro Tools.

Having read up a bit now I can't see how you can master PROPERLY without getting the right acoustics etc in the room though. It would sound like bubbling, sweaty gash surely? Has he had this done?
I'm just in the process of sorting my studio walls, ceiling etc. :) Can't wait till it's done. More for my production though as I'd rather hand the mastering over to someone who knows exactly what they're doing.
