WARNING! THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS!
I went to see Will Smith in his first zombie flick at the cinema today. As much as I'd love to put him down, I did not leave disappointed. The film starts with a young scientist from the UK announcing that she has discovered a cure for cancer. Three years later, we hit apocalypse. A young man from New York (Will Smith), and his dog Samantha are driving through the empty streets of Manhattan in their car, randomly looking (supposedly) for something to hunt. After chasing a herd of deer, they go to the peer to lookout on the city when they spot a deer running solo between the cars. Sam chases it through the vehicles into a building with no light. Smith chases her in attempting to get her out, for the building is somehow unsafe. After following a trail of blood up the stairs, he sees a group of infected humans that can only live in the dark feeding on something. He carefully moves past them when he sees his dog hiding under a table. When he turns he is spontaneously attacked by an infected zombie. He escapes with his pet and runs home, where he locks up readying himself for the dark. The next morning they go to the video store to hire some DVDs from the plastic models who run the shop. As they leave, they find another plastic model, lovingly named Fred, standing in the middle of the road. When Neville approaches it, he is caught in a trap and is knocked out until the nightfall. At dusk, he awakens and tries to detach himself. He does so and falls into another trap. As he tries to escape the arriving zombies, he ends up fighting 3 zombie dogs with no gun. He manages to kill them but Sam is seriously injured in the fight and becomes infected. He kills her and buries her. Feeling so hurt after Sam's death, he tries to take on a large group of zombies on the peer at the dead of night, but he is beaten and almost killed, but saved in the nick of time by another survivor. Anna (Alice Braga) and her son Ethan (Charlie Tahan) take him back to his house to discuss their escape to a survivors camp in Vermont. He won't hear a word of it, but suddenly they are attacked by a group of zombies who had followed them home the night before. They hide in the basement, where Robert takes his own life to destroy the remaining zombies after discovering that the cure for KV is in the human blood. Anna and Ethan then go to the camp in Vermont and pay tribute to Robert Neville.
All in all I enjoyed the film, though I was peeved at the fact that it was almost an exact copy of previously released film 28 Days later, set in London. If you haven't seen 28 Days Later, I absolutely recommend this film for any fantasy/horror fan, if you have seen it, then it is still a fun night out.

This is a dumb argument over opinions. I'm not going to continue over something so insignificant =]

Very disappointing film. The ideas in it are tired and have been done much better over the years. I thought the first have was quite good up until the awful CG mutants. They were ****ing terrible.
I pretty much give up on the film once he started talking to the dummy. what the ****!?
He shot one mutant in the whole film. If it was supposed to be a survival horror type film they should have just strapped loads of guns to him and have him blow the shit out of thousands of mutants. That would have been more fun!

i actually liked the film. yeh the whole idea of mutants and the end of civilization thing has been done before, but i think that it was done better in this film than in 28 days later.
i liked 28 days later aswell but this was different. there wasnt as much shootin and chasin etc. it dug a bit deeper. the whole talkin to doll things was supposed to show in a way what would actually happen to anyone who was all alone for 3 years. you'd just go mental.
this film i think was tryin to show a bit more about the emotional side of things. and i think it did that quite well, and i thought is was a good film - apart from the ending, that was a bit too cheesy - american happy ending.

I can understand what you mean, though I thought the realism of 28 Days Later made it a much scarier film
