What's the deal with this phrase then?

In the course book I'm studying at the moment it says it basically means please excuse me, goodbye. Basically like a polite goodbye to a boss or someone important or a goodbye if you're leaving in a rude way somehow.

Is this right though? I read somewhere that kids use say it to a teacher when they enter the teachers lounge and use "shitsurei shimashita" when they leave...

I'm a bit confused now. :(

Never heard of 'shitsurei shimasu' being used as someone enters a place, but I only studied Japanese for half a year so feel free to disregard me completely :D

Yeah you use it when you enter a place, it's more of like "excuse me for entering your place" or if you came late to a meeting you might say it, or if you entered a room or had to interrupt someone. You also say it when you hang up the phone if you want it to be formal, there is actually a longer verison of it that I can't remember (and don't use) because it's mainly for girls or office ladies to use when they phone people.

I find it funny how japanese is so complicated. There are phrases specifically for females and stuff..

OK, nice one. So can it be used when saying goodbye as well? Like excuse me for leaving or something.

Agreed. They probably think the same about the odd things in our language though.

You would say it to your boss or if you're younger than than older person you would say it to them, or if you a girl, it's a respect thing. I don't do it that much unless I get into trouble with my Japanese and want to say sorry and thanks for putting up with my Japanese.

OK thanks, that's cleared that up. Seems most of the bits of the language that are hard to figure out are down to talking respectfully. Think that says something about our language!

It was the bowing that got me most when I went to Japan. I came back home and kept bowing to everyone! People thought I was mad. :P

I don't think it's just our language thats let down by lack of respect...it's our whole society sadly.

haha I'm not surprised :p. It must stick with you pretty quickly though the amount you would be doing it out there.

Mortis - Yeah, you're right there. :( Seems it's pretty much the norm to have very little respect for anything or anyone in the UK.
