Need to get one of these to keep all my porn films WAV files on as they take too much of a chunk out my storage space.

Looking at these:-

25Western Digital Elements 500GB USB2.0 External Hard Drive Retail
Found in: Hard Drives»External Desktop Drives
QuickFind Code: 128465 | Mfr part #: WDE1U5000U
(14 reviews) Western Digital 202 £57.60
ex vat
£67.68
inc vat
12Western Digital 500GB USB2.0 External Hard Drive 16MB Cache Retail Mybook II
Found in: Hard Drives»External Desktop Drives
QuickFind Code: 136212 | Mfr part #: WDH1U5000E
(14 reviews) Western Digital 241 £63.68

A good enough choice? Would the 16MB Cache make a huge difference to speed if I'm just using it for video and music?

Cheaper somewhere else?

Cheers.

Your better getting one with an ethernet/firewire output instead of USB. Much more reliable and a lot faster than USB 2.

That price isnt too bad though.

USB 2.0 is fast enough. I doubt hes moving 10's of gig's of stuff in a daily basis. ...and USB 2.0 is more reliable, plug it in -> it works. Where as in an ethernet one you need to configure permissions and other crap.

I bought a Seagate 320GB (7200-RPM, 16-MB cache, USB 2.0) hard drive. It has worked well, the only downside with it, is that it goes to "sleep mode" when i dont use it, so after that it takes like 2-3 seconds to "wake up" again. (well, that isnt really the annoying thing, the annoying thing is that it wakes up everytime you open my computer or trash can.)

Safe.

So is getting the 16mb cache worth it?

Really if it's not going to make accessing video and music a pain then I'd rather take the cheapest option. Most I'll be putting over is 1-2gb at a time and I'm not too bothered if this is super fast.

TBH, i didnt see much diffrence moving files to the HDD compared to moving files to another computer through ethernet. I have no idea what the cache does, so cant say having it is a good thing or not. The seller told me that the one i have should also be fast enough to play HD video, but wouldnt guarantee it.

just like there's a difference between USB 1.0/1.1 and 2.0, there's different Firewire versions, and FW that I think most PC's support are just slighlty faster than USB 2.0

I find USB plenty fast enough for playback. (We use two usb drives as a file server)

Transfer is a bit of a pain and the drives are virtually unusable for playback while transferring data

Id get the cache just to safe
