Something i've been thinking about for a while is the defining caharacteristic of nu skool is the basslines we have now. Modern hardcore all seems to have these vibrating gritty basslines and lighter beats than the old days.
For example every Hixxy/breeze/styles release since late 2004 have all followed this pattern, it is the same with essential platinum also. (Every clubland hardcore album are very good examples of this) The bassline has taken over the rhythm of hardcore music whereas in 1996 and 97 when hardcore as some would argue was at its best. We had gentle bassline in most cases combined with hard pumping stabs for example bonkers 2 hixxy disk had so many such as Wham bam by vinylgroover, admittedly not the best hardcore track ever but it made you realise you were listening to it !!! Back then the beat dictated the pace of the music as it should by bouncing you round the dancefloor. I am not saying by any means that modern beats and basslines are bad! In fact one of my favourite tunes ever is Sy & unknown - Let the bass boom From resists worlds hard fast and furious. The rippling bassline on that track still blows my mind and on a powerful sound system is almost godlike, but i feel there are too many tracks thrown together where the beat and pace is underminded by a half a***d cop out of a flat loud bassline(for example faith track 11 on the helterskelter album rave nation disk 3! a good tune but a c**p bassline).
If billybunter and slipmatt can make old rave breaks new with new smaples and production, Dj Druid and stormtrooper make wicked tracks with some old samples mixed with new, Why can we not bring back the proper hard beats and cut back the commercial basslines and bring back the STABS! I know they were everywhere back in the old days but in 98/99 they were replaced by conventional beats and look what happened.
Just listen to some old bonkers /Hardcore heavens from the old days and you'll see what i mean. I think if the Nu skool basslines and the old beats were combined Hardcore would be hard as is should be not watered down!

^^^ I agree with you! I listen to a lot of Bouncy Techno & Happy Gabber and that is really stomping! Most Upfront stuff is just watered down and I have lost interest in it! Wanting to Get High by Hixxy & Sharkey (the original version) is what hard beats should sound like, the 2001 remix is nothing compared to the original!

I Completely agree too. I love all the new Hardcore stuff (Although a lot of it does tend to sound very similar) But i much preferred the style of music in the mid to late 90s. Definitely a lot less commercial sounding.

I'm liking the style and sound of alot of Darwin tracks. He's got he perfect blend of old rave style stabs, pianos and new style beats, bass and structure (Shimamura has been making this sound for I don't know how long).
A few people have been producing this style recenlty, I only hope it continues.

Yeah darwin is definately making some good stuff at the moment along with kurt, druid and stormtrooper. I think if you are gonna have a bassline make if different and make the beats pound

Someone once gave a link to a dawin remix of like a dream by Bass D & King Matthew I think it is which is a stomper! Not bad for a track only made last year!

I don't really like that remix to be honest.

90% of stuff out today to me is not Hardcore, it's definitely something and that certainly isn't it.
So naturally i have no interest, and for something that's meant to be Hardcore it's utter utter crap.

Speed-donk. 8-)
TBH it depends on the track. I'm quite open to music and aint going to pick a preference based on a few base aspects. The type of cheese Hardcore I have liked the most tracks from though is the early 93-95 hard kick with break style stuff.

I'm open to it as well but unfortunately it's rarely good as any kind of music, not just hardcore :P Commercial music will a=always be bad.

Yeah, it tends to have a bigger % of trash. Is plenty of less or non commercial stuff bouncing about though.

It's such a shame we have come so far but learnt so little. Back in the golden age of 1996 and 1997 Dj's led by darren styles and dougal started to change the music to make it more popular (anyone remember hixxys mix on bonkers 3 - utterly soul destroying). the commerical influence back then must have had an influence which ultimately almost killed hardcore. But we came back as a scene after two dead years with a new breed of hardcore that revitalised the scene but yet again hixxy and styles with their clubland cds are commercialising our scene again to make it more popular (not that i don't like the music, some of my favourite tracks came from clubland hardcore cds). I just thing it is a poor representation of the scene we are all part of wether you are a raver or a dj or just someone who buys the cds we all contribute and should be heard. As it is without Darwin and kurt who show somewhat the old style of hard beats, samples and piano, we would be in a very bad place much like 1999. I just think it's funny that ten years on from 1998 when it started to go wrong we haven't learn that commercial involvement and softening of the music will bring in new fans but alienate the stalwart fans of the scene. New fans of hardcore are fickle and will turn their backs on the music in a heartbeat so we cannot turn our backs on the real hardcore supporters!

i sort of agree, but i feel the scene is being killed by the top producers NOT showcasing the new talent, theres loads of excellent up & coming producers out there that have their own style, but the 'same old names' are on the top selling CD's, darwin kurt & joey riot have only just broken through, also it's down to the producer to make something new & NOT listen to feedback if they post a track for review, i mean.... if you posted a track without an off beat bassline.... then thats the first complaint you'll get !
my 2 cents
