If you're more geared towards music production, you won't really need a mixer for anything. What you will need are the following things:
1. Music production software
2. Audio interface (aka sound card for audio production/recording)
3. Studio monitors
4. Obviously, a computer (which in this case is your Mac)
For your software, I would highly recommend either Logic Studio or Cubase Studio. They both cost around the same with Logic Studio just being a tad more expensive. Logic comes with a TON of stuff right out of the box and has an immense value tied to its price tag. You definitely get a lot more value for your money, but may also be quite overwhelming if you're just getting into production. I've recommended Cubase Studio to plenty of people wanting to use Cubase, but don't use a lot of the features that the full version offers and it's seemed to work out very well for them. Both of these programs fit into the budget you proposed, but there's also the other items I mentioned that will cost you a few extra bucks.
