How do you go about getting them?
is it just for well known DJs who play live often etc?

record labels will only give you promos if they think they will get something out of it. So yeah they only really send them to DJs who play live alot and who will put their track out there as promos are a way to get the music heard by the public to see what kind of reaction the track gets for a possible full release

Well I did tend to get promos from The Acolyte & Ben Fable, and they know I only make studio mixes

There's a few ways to get promos - since all it really means is a copy of a track before it's commercially released. So if you're a big name DJ, producers may send you material so that it gets exposure. The easier and more common way, though, is if you've got a friend who's a producer... they might send you promos if they feel they can trust you.
