Ok bud this is going to be a long one. But here goes.

Befoe you spend any money on software make sure you have all the correct equipment In your computer to run it all. You will need a good size of RAM Anything above 500MB should be fine, Also helps having a good processor quad core or duo are good to run music software and might even be worth while getting a good soundcard to

Ok now thats out the way here is some music production software which are all good but all take time to learn. So stick with what ever you decide to go for. Trust me you will pick it up,

Propellerheads Reason Version 4

The main features of the Propellerheads reason 4

* A virtual studio rack with all the tools and instruments you need to turn your ideas into music
* Synthesizers, samplers, drum machine, REX file loop player, professional mastering tools, mixer, vocoder, world class effects, pattern sequencer and more
* Includes THOR - The Polysonic Synthesizer - a modular synthesizer featuring six different oscillator types and four unique filters
* Includes RPG-8 - Monophonic Arpeggiator - a brand new unit dedicated to the art of arpeggiation! Use it on your breakbeats, orchestra samples, or your vocals
* Includes ReGroove Mixer - Real Time Groove Console - a unique tool to make your music sound less rigid, less programmed
* New Advanced Sequencer - workflow is hugely improved, swifter, stronger and more intuitive than ever
* New floating tool window contains all your most frequently used tools
* Factory Sound Bank Updated
* Combinator and NN-XT updates - both have had minor revisions to make programming patches easier and more powerful

* Use Reason the way you want to - As a self-contained synth studio system: Everything you need is there, including a fast and flexible sequencer with powerful, dedicated event editors for each type of device. OR As a sub-system synchronized to your audio sequencer: Process Reason's audio output with plug-in effects and mix it with your hard disk tracks. With Reason in ReWire mode, its instruments are automatically patched into the mixer in any other ReWire compatible application. Seamless integration. OR As a Workstation synth: Easily load up complex performance patches - instruments pre-routed through effects - in one single click. Perfect for live gigs and performances.

* Reason 4 System Requirements - Windows: Windows XP or Vista, Intel P4 / AMD Athlon XP or better, 512 MB RAM minimum (1 GB recommended), 1024x768 Screen resolution, 2 GB free hard disk space, DVD reader, 16-bit windows compatible audio card, preferably with DirectX or ASIO drivers, MIDI keyboard with built-in MIDI interface, or MIDI keyboard and MIDI interface recommended. Mac OS: Mac OS X 10.4, G4 1GHz and up or Intel Mac, 512 MB RAM minimum (1 GB recommended), 1024x768 Screen resolution, 2 GB free hard disk space, DVD reader, MIDI keyboard with built-in MIDI interface, or MIDI keyboard and MIDI interface recommended

I would recomend this software as you can hook it up to Cubase and run them together.

Hi!
Djbuzz really did cover alot in that epic post :D

The only thing i can point out is that if you are on a tight budjet, i recommend trackers. Music trackers are free which is really quality, they have a distinctive interface which can take some getting used too but for a free program you cant really complain :)

http://www.renoise.com/

Renoise is VST compatible and is an established music tracker that is free and well worth a look :D
