I've got BT BB and a BT home hub. I've not put any locks or anything on yet, do I need to do anything so people can't steal my interweb?
Chars.

im pretty sure BT home hub's are secure from the get go. i tried to connect with my laptop to mine and i could only do it if i entered the code off the back of the router.

Yes, you need to pick it up and put it in the bin and buy a proper router.
Though seriously, make sure you use the best encryption it can handle and a proper password for the admin log in. Thats all anyone can do really.

I think they come with WPA encryption as standard but it's normally a predictable word followed by 4 numbers that someone extremely determined to piggy-back your net connection could probably figure out eventually, but the chances are really slim ;)
Best thing to do is activate WEP encryption from the advanced settings and write it in the space provided in the user manual so you don't lose it.
The radius on them isn't far, next-door will be able to pick it up but not a chance of them getting a reliable connection. The one my fam uses doesn't even give a decent connection in the same room as it ;)

WLAN isnt really secure, but using encryption makes sure the hax0r kiddies cant do anything criminal under your "address".

Im sure I still have the software to crack the BT home hubs and get full speed out them if you want it bud. I never had a problem with them just make sure you change the WEP key and check all the security boxes and change the login from ADMIN to something else and you should be ok
Pm me if you want the software bud

They may be better now if they have been updated but upon release they were awful, people had loads of problems with them.

Make sure you use at least WPA.
Dont use WEP as it is easily hackable.

Wow a lot of stuff i dont understand in this topic lol. But one thing id like to ask, since im getting broadband this week and the person im living with insists we cant have cable iv had to use Tiscali and you get all this free wireless stuff, so i was just wondering will the people in the Wireless area just be able to use my connection for free (which i dont mind tbh) or will they be able to actually go on my computer and do stuff/steal stuff? Sorry if the answer to this is an obvious yes or no im just not too up on technical things lol.

Fingaz - if you don't secure your wireless network you run a whole lot of risk to your home system (depending on the security on it), along with the danger of what people do with your connection. In the US you can be held accountable if crimes are committed using your unsecured wireless connection, but I don't know if the laws elsewhere are similar. WEP is easily cracked (in as little as 30 seconds) so you definitely want WPA or higher encryption. I also can't really understand why you'd pay for bandwidth and then give it away to a stranger for free?

Lol the house i live in at the moment is on a sub-urban estate with old people and toffs, doubful there would be anyone commiting crimes with my connection. But i do see your point about other people using my bandwidth i probably feel guilty for stealing my neigbours wireless for so long before i moved lol!. Im definetly going to invest in some good security then iv got way to much stuff and put way too much effort into the music iv got on here for anyone to fiddle with, steal or damage it.
