Hello all, I am squiggle cat. I'm new to these boards but a regular over at RO and a photographer for them. Recently, I've felt the need to create my own music considering I listen to music as often as I can.
I've wanted to get into Mixing/producing for a long time, just for some reason never took the initiative. I spent all of today trying to find where to start but find myself swimming in a pool of details. I've acquired virtualdj, and spent a little time just trying to get myself used to listening to beats and attempting to beat match, but still feel totally lost.
I should probably mention what type of music I plan to create, since I assume that matters where I should look and what I should do. I prefer UK hard house, hard style, hardcore, hhc, dnb, terrorcore, horrorcore, and industrial.
Everything I've read online seems to gear people towards mixing that I'm not interested in(mostly transitioning from one track to another using beat matching).
I do understand that is very important, but it doesn't seem as if the music I listen to is simply transitions; they all feel as if it is a lot of loops, samples, jingles and overlays.

Where do I start?
How do I rip vocals?
Do I have to produce my own beats to overlay and mix in?
How do you keep a track on a loop? It seems a lot of songs run on a bass line repeating over the course of 4 bars, though they have a loop of hats also going over all the while with a vocal(for instance, a loop/full song of heart of gold overlayed). How is this accomplished?

help...so confused and desperate to jump into this. While I do know a lot of you will say to get a set of decks and a mixer, that is NOT the answer I am looking for. I mainly want to know how these "tricks" are preformed so I can get an ear for it on VDJ while I save for my decks and mixer.

(on a side note, I do HAVE to numark belt-drive turntables, but no mixer yet)

welcome to the board.

you should find all the information you're looking for here. i just started producing myself, there are tutorials on youtube and all over the net to get you started.

i'm using fruity loops, and it seems to be a good "starter" program, perfect for learning on.

anyway, good luck and read through this:

It is my understanding(correct me if I am wrong) to start out learning on decks then progressing to the producing aspect of it(creation of samples using programs such as FL).
Before I can even think about jumping into FL and the such, I believe I may want to learn how to even spin =P

Nah, you're wrong. You seem to somehow be making a connection between DJ'ing and producing, there isn't one.

If you want to make tunes get yourself a copy of Cubase, FL Studio or Reason (Logic if you're using a Mac). See the sticky at the top of this forum for more details on them.

I use FL Studio so if you grab that I can help you out over MSN if you like [email protected] I can give you general help if you get any of the others but wont be familiar with the interface you're using. There is loads of producers on this board that will be happy to help with specific questions though.

If I were you... As well as getting a production program, I'd make a start by reading up on Subtractive synthesis, Compression, EQ and Reverb.

Same as what Bulby said! Many people on here will help you out if you get stuck with anything? Might even be a good idea to download the demo's of Reason And Fruity loops to get a idea of the software before getting the full package.

As Bulby said there ain't a link between Dj'ing and production You need 2 totally diffrent frames of mind, For Dj'ing you need to concentrate on being able to pick beats apart at the same time. Working out which if one is going faster or slower in your head and adjusting the pitch of the track to suit the one being played out.l

As for Production you need to be able to think up breaks, Synthesis, Leads, Beats and place them all into a track and get them sounding crisp. Which is hard to get used to, I started by useing Midi files of Trance tunes, It makes a good start as you dont need to make up the tune, U just need to pick the sounds of the track and lay it out. Sometimes this is a good starting place to learn.

Anyway if you need any help ask away. We are all friendly here well most of us lol

Happy Production

Do most producers end up djing their own work? I for one would love to do this as it seems it would give me an original way to get different tunes and beats.

Scott brown plays a lot of his own stuff when he plays out and a few others do it too, But suppose it all part of the buisness.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

Now for programs, i have been reading a lot of debate as to which programs you want to use. The most common names that pop up are FL, Cubase or Reason. Though there seems to be a lot of people who say to use Reason then cubase in order to help it sounds more crisp, but that seems like a major financial investment for two production programs. What are some of your guys personal tastes and if you could give a simple reason as to why you prefer that particular piece of software.

Reason has to be the choice for me, soo much choice of samples and other plug ins also i feel its easy to get to grips with. Read my post on production, hope it helps.

Use whatever you feel comfortable with, you can get the same results with any of them 3. Try the demos and get a feel for them.

I actually believe that reason has an inferior internal sound engine to fl/cubase/logic actually.

Also unless you rewire reason... a reason track will always sound like a reason track because of the lack of vst compatibility.
