Hey guys if you know what cutting is? Like when you mix in a song and then you cut do you use the fader or the gains? This is my 1st time doing it and for those who dunno what cutting is, cutting is when you change over to the next song but don't leave the previous playing.

Here is my example of cutting and please tell me if it's any good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnIEMoU_cqc (NOTE THERE ARE 2 TRANSITIONS IN THIS CLIP ONE NEAR THE START AND ONE NEAR THE END OF THE VIDEO)

Hope you can help. :)

Didn't see the vid, because I can't at the moment. But you can cut with the crossfader or the channel faders. I use the channel faders and don't do a full cut, usually, depends on what kind of cut you're doing. My crossfader is really lame. :(

I'm sure there are some purists on here who would love to disagree with me, but that's how I does it.

It's really up to you tbh. Each to their own, as long as you can get the sound you want.

Hmmm I tried to cut with upfader/crossfader but it just cuts out the sound to fast making it noticeable but with gains it cuts but smootly I think. Could be wrong so dunno. :(

What do you mean by cutting? What I mean is something that's not meant to sounds smooth, but a really fast CUT over to one track.

If you're talking about a normal transition or just regular mixing, you use whatever you like to make it smooth. Lots of people use channel faders or cross faders...don't know about using the gain knob.

EDIT:

Either way, timing is the most important part. When you're cutting fast, treat it like a musical instrument.

It depends what I'm doing... If I'm swapping to one channel for a bar or something I'll use the xfader, if I'm doing something like chopping some kicks in on a breakdown I'll use the ^fader.

If you're on about cutting to the next track I tend to use the crossfader or sometimes bring all the EQ's back depending on the mix.

doesn't cutting refer to bringing in a 2nd track for a bar and then going back to the first? you don't seem to be doing anything other than bringing in a 2nd track over the first one and then mixing the outro of the first to the intro of the next

Well if you did goto the video thing. All I done was bring in the 2nd song change bassline and cut the other song out.

Yea I didnt really hear any "cutting." You just slowly faded out of the first song which sounded fine.

Cutting to me is moving the cross fader or the level fader on the track your currently playing all the way down so you can hear the part of the other track you want to cut with.

That's what I've always used the word for... Not just for a bar though, a beat or whatever too.
