hello, i am about to recieve a laptop and would love to start trying to make music. i know you need a soundcard ideally but i dont think i would be able to upgrade a laptop with one (correct me if im wrong)
would i be able to use the m-audio firewire external soundcard to do the same job as a proper soundcard would on a desktop?
sorry im very new to all this and have read in the latest issue of CORE what is needed and they say you need a soundcard. any help always apreciated
cheers, frank

External cards are fine mate. You would have been better off with a high power desktop for making music though! Laptops just don't have the raw power.
I'm sure 90% of people just get a laptop for the sake of it these days and don't really need one...

You should have guessed you wouldn't be able to stay away. ;) Don't get me wrong though, laptops definitely have their uses! I've got one myself that we use to record at parties and will be using for Serato when I get it. :)

imo the best thing to do would be buy some extra ram for your laptop.
even the basic laptops you see in pc world will have a spare slot... at least mine did!
but after spending a tenner on an extra 512mb , total 1gb you can run vsts such as, zeta and vanguard, well enough to begin making music
