I agree with the ear protection, I read an article once about dj's that don't use ear plugs or whatsoever and in the long run those guys either have severe ear damage or actually go deaf so it's a good thing to purchase those.

The gigs after that my hearing is fine right afterwards and it dosent impare mixing etc.. its a seriously good investment to make.

Being in a very loud DJ booth for an hour is something you can recover from without much damage. However, being in a loud rave for 12 hours will cause severe damage.

I don't have my earplugs in when I'm mixing at a gig but I have them in 100% of the rest of the time.

Yep, ear damage is to do with the db level and more importantly, Time Exposure

Also bear in mind that a dj will only have a monitor (500w rms?) pointing at them most of the time, ravers will probably have at least 10,000w rms and as da-jain mentioned, be exposed to the sound for up to 10 times as long

While most people will never loose their entire hearing, they may loose a percentage of it. The most common symptom is tinnitus. For the people who have it, it drives them mad cause the ringing pretty much never stops. Some people have been known to commit suicide cause it drove them insane.

I have a set of those proguard's. They definatly dont give me a flat response. I hear lots of bass, really clear vocals, the highs are somewhat quieter, which is annoying if you use them for mixing, imo defined highs are really necessary in music and these plugs dont deliver, for me anyhow. They are the cheap end of custom plugs, I have no idea how much better the high end stuff is.

I think I should get some soon too. A few weeks ago while working on a song I loaded up a VST instrument as an effect (it wasn't meant to be an effect) and when I played the song this horrifyingly loud sound blasted my ears out. Made me jump and my ears rang for a bit. Would plugs protect from that kind of stuff?

as i mentioned, ear damage is dependant on db level and the time you are exposed. your speakers probably only produce, at a guess, 120 db Max, you were exposed for say 2 seconds? you wont damage your ears with that. there is a table on the internet somewhere which shows you what you are allowed to be exposed to and for how long but i cant seem to find it
