wasnt really my point as to who could do it or not, more proof that people ARE willing to pay for music given the choice *free or charge*.
NiN are barely known outside of the states anyway :P

why do u think most non hardcore artists do well? advertising. crazy frog for instance in the uk, advertised to death, got in everyones head, sold really really well. if hardcore was on the tv alot in mags and tv guides then the money would roll in 4 the producers... just needs sum one to start it off
Jakazid + Barry Scott = Cillit Bang?
Triq: Personally, if the track is good and i want it, I pay/donate to get it (I wouldnt mind paying 192kb/s if the track IS that good). If the track isnt that good or sucks, I wouldn't spend a dime on it (could be the reason why I havent bought a mixed compilation since Bonkers 10).
Yea, when it came to that free album thing, Radiohead got some news coverage for giving their latest album out for free/donation, while NiN barely got any, if we exclude *******freak

and anyway what a stupid question.
Since the dawn of mankind musicians have made a living from creating something that others can't.
....unless of course you want the world flooded with 'music' from the likes of Rankin.

Ok,
So i buy atleast $10 000 worth of eqipment and purchase software, plugins etc. make music get it put on vinyl and mp3 stores and then dont get anything in return, including the record companys. Not really a win win situation. just my opinion :)
