Anything that characterizes the music in a different way and make sound collide & smooth is a DJ. Its not based on what you use. My opinion.

I prefer Vinyl, but I do own a ishload of MP3s, but I do not use CDJs, I just use MP3s for my LIVE 365 Station... Vinyl, is actually better sound quality then a CD! Unmixed CDs are your best bet for material like that, but like I said, I spin vinyl, and listen to MP3s!

well if you consider vinyl more challenging what's wrong w/ using time coded vinyl to play mp3s on?
I use both, prefer vinyl because that's what I started on...and you can't get a lot of older stuff on mp3.
at the end of the day as long as the dj is able to amuse and not sound like two shoes in a dryer I don't think it matters

what makes a DJ? good track selection based on the best of both worlds, and solid beatmatching.
just know what you're doing.

False! A much cleaner sound is available through digital media, however the current trends in mastering tend to demolish the potential for such quality.

Vinyl makes it more legit in my opinion. That being said you all must know I spin both Vinyl AND CD in an attempt to keep up with the times.
The format issue though sometimes gets me down.I mean, I love Vinyl but it's expensive compared to mp3s yet If I switched to mp3 only how could I ever prove to anyone I legally purchased all my music?
I could've easily built up a collection without forking out a single cent(other than for internet access) in this day and age.
for the moment I've decided to fill my cd wallet with exclusive material(i.e. only stuff released on digital) and save up for the vinyl.
...at least I will try :P (can't help the urge to buy some fresh vinyl releases on mp3 every now and then)

who would ever bring that into question unless you were playing crappy, ripped MP3s that you downloaded to an audience? if you were playing them live, they would sound like crap and people would notice.

It doesnt really matter what you use, its how you use it. I have seen people do amazing things on either. The biggest thing is setting yourself apart from every other dj. Who cares if you are playing the rarest of records or the freshest stuff out there, if you can make people remember you then thats what make you the better dj.

I use computer, cdjs & Vinyl for DJing. Computer is the easiest since it got Automatic beat matching. Doesnt make you any less of a DJ, its just technology has advanced over the years making things easier & better.

only reason vinyl "might" be better is because Audio CDs (and MP3s) are locked to 44kHz

Why does everyone seem to think that only mixing & track selection makes a DJ, obvioulsy that's part of it but there's a lot more to a live set than that & if that's all u do then i'd rather go & see a live rock band to be honest!
I hate seeing dj's these day's just hiding behind a set of CDJ's pressing a few buttons & calling himself a DJ. I mean, put a bit of effort in. Let's not forget what DJing is all about. It's bringing together all styles & sounds combined with lot's of cutting & scratching techniques. If it was down to seeing a DJ that mixes & only mixes at a club, I would honestly rather see a rock band(not Indie lol) because at least htese guy's are putting sum effort in & playing the music themselves.
IMO it's too easy to be a DJ these day's cause everything is there for you, effects ect & were using techniques that are designed by the company ie Pioneer. At the end of the day, it's these guy's that are deciding what our music will sound like & where it's going. I saw on another forum that someone was pissed off because they were sick of the effects on their CDJ's so they couldn't wait till the new set came out so that they could try some nu stuff! WTF! If this isn't the company leading our styles then what is.
I say, get yourself a set of Vinyl decks, Scratch live & a mixer that can accept an effects box & then you've got the best of both worlds only with the endless limits of Vinyl.
