who would ever bring that into question unless you were playing crappy, ripped MP3s that you downloaded to an audience? if you were playing them live, they would sound like crap and people would notice.
DJ's with CD wallets full of pirated material are a fact and that to me tops it off for unprofessionalism.

Collectable part is true. I own some records myself even though I don't use TTs to mix.

I hate seeing dj's these day's just hiding behind a set of CDJ's pressing a few buttons & calling himself a DJ. I mean, put a bit of effort in. Let's not forget what DJing is all about. It's bringing together all styles & sounds combined with lot's of cutting & scratching techniques. If it was down to seeing a DJ that mixes & only mixes at a club, I would honestly rather see a rock band(not Indie lol) because at least htese guy's are putting sum effort in & playing the music themselves.
IMO it's too easy to be a DJ these day's cause everything is there for you, effects ect & were using techniques that are designed by the company ie Pioneer. At the end of the day, it's these guy's that are deciding what our music will sound like & where it's going. I saw on another forum that someone was pissed off because they were sick of the effects on their CDJ's so they couldn't wait till the new set came out so that they could try some nu stuff! WTF! If this isn't the company leading our styles then what is.
I say, get yourself a set of Vinyl decks, Scratch live & a mixer that can accept an effects box & then you've got the best of both worlds only with the endless limits of Vinyl.
Nowdays you can Scratch with almost the same quality with a pair of good cdjs.
BUT Scratching does not make a good set. Mostly is really anoying when you are dancing.
A few weeks ago I was at a party and a guy from Australia played called Mark N. It was the most anoying set I´ve ever heard! Sure, he was good at Scratching but he did it the whole time. The whole set was a BIG Scratch.
When you are dancing you dont wanna hear that Scratch, I dont care about the Scratch. I want good music and good mixing. And ofcourse, it always fun if the DJ does something fun behind the decks that makes the crowd wanna dance even more ;)
On most big hardcore parties in England, Australia and so on DJs can just stand and hide behind the decks because they have a MC that does all the non mixing work for them... And thats sad...
And to the topic.. Use whatever you want (cdjs, vinyl, computer, keyboards) as long as you dont play a pre-recorded mix. You are NOT a DJ, and will never be, if you do it pre-recorded.

actually i think the things that make a true DJ good, are wether or not they are adaptable to different styles of djing...
using mp3, vinyl or cd's uses different skills...
i think as long as some one can actually mix in the songs well, and keep the beat, then they are doing alright.
also, the ability to work a crowd... but im a sucker for the vinyls. old school.

Forgive me, but is a DJ not somebody who's tools are music? Is music not listened to with your ears rather than your eyes?
I'm sorry, but this question is like "What makes a musician - somebody who plays the trumpet or a guitar?"

That's the smartest thing I've heard all day, and I've heard a few smart things today.

I'm offended. I have a rare condition where I must listen to music with my eyes. Also, you aren't a musician unless you play the kazoo.

I've actually thought of buying at least one Essential Platinum vinyl, I mean, I love A LOT of Dougal & Gammer's material, like "Lose Me Forever" and "Get Hype", and sure, I can get these tracks at serioussounds, but just that feeling of actually holding up the actual pressed record would make me feel so good :) I own 1 vinyl, and that's the CyberRaver anthem from EvilZ.

i personally don't care what avenue the dj uses to play music. i just either want to hear fresh new examples of fine music and mixing, or i want to hear the classics. one you might have to use cdjs for and the other you'll have to use vinyl for.
otherwise i could really give a shit how they make it come out of the speakers just as long as the mixing in good and the tracks go together.
