can anyone else share their views on this
i have heard its bad for the red lights to show on the mixer and it does make sense
but i notice when i mix some tracks need to be red for the volume to be the same as the last track.
i recently bought some turntables again and i have noticed that with vinyl some need to be in the red( more so than cd's)
does anyone else notice this or am i doing something completely wrong lol
thanks

what mixer are you using?
sometimes i would have to turn one track up more than the other, ie more gain but only to the point where the lights were level (still no reds)

Same.
The trouble is sometimes when you mix the tracks the overall level can push into reds and when you come out of the mix he volume can seem lower all of a sudden, that's where the cross fader comes into play.

i think he means when you mix two tracks together they can pust the master level up into the reds, sliding the cross fader over towards the new track will drop the volume of the track being mixed out and therefore the master output
as long as its only a few odd tracks that you need to turn the gain up on to get them level, and you know you aint pushing that track any harder than the one you are mixing out of then i seriously doubt there will be an issue. its probably just down to the way the vinyl has been pressed
not much concrete info but hth

That's what I was aiming at.

a little bit of red showing isn't going to kill ya. you don't want a lot or you will start getting distortion.
it's good to practice keeping your levels out of the red though as most sound system setups will have the red as being the max for the amp output.

I try to always give myself some slack below red levels for just that purpose. A tiny bit of red won't kill ya though.

clipping is a form of distortion, wave distortion to be exact. so yes to both.

If your just playing in your bedroom or house it don't really matter about going in the red, this should only really apply if your recording a mix or playing out live on a big system, they led's are there to make sure your not overloading the system,
If your just messing about try turning you master down on the mixer and turn your stereo up, this way you can keep the master output lever in the green but still get nice loud sound out your amp and speakers.
If u need more volume from a track try using the gains on the mixer and boost the mid and the high if the track is quieter than the one you are playing,

There is no reason why you should be going in the red anyway. If you need a bit of movement up there just turn down the mixer and turn up your amp. Have your "sweet spot" on the mixer a bit lower than you do so it gives you space to play.
