I'll sometimes use a percussion loop to pad a track out if it needs it. Never as the main drums for the track though. Always layer open and closed hats, a ride and a clap and/or snare over it all, some times add other little percussion sounds in there too.

I always use samples from sample packs for my percussion, and loops from sample packs to fill out the track. I'll usually slice/re-arrange them myself though.

thanks all for your responses. obviously i am a newbie to all this but i have been trying to make some drum loops and things just dont sound right, but i dont want to have to use drum loops id prefer to make everything myself. i like complicated drumloops like jungle and tribal stuff and id like to put this into my music.
i thought maybe im doin things the wrong way round, do you tend to make your sounds and write your drums around that or does everyone start of with a drum loops first and build from there?

If I don't already have an idea for a track I'll start playing with drums and bass first and write around that. If I have an idea for a melody or whatever, I'll write around that.
