basically whenever i bring some samples into cubase and put them down on an audio track and then play them they sound horrible and crackly and there is a sort of delay effect as well.
i get this problem on fruity loops sometimes also but this is usually if i have loads of effects running at the same time. it happens on cubase if i have even just one riff put down.
im using a laptop with a 1.7g processor and 0.5gig ram. this should be enough to run cubase surely?
is there something im doing wrong or is my laptop just a pile o sh*te?

Not enough ram, You really need over 1gb of ram to run it properly but the more the better to be honest, I get this problem with reason all the time, My tracks stutter as there is not enought ram to run all the sounds loaded into the sequencer, With cubase you can freeze the vst's or so ive heard which can help if your running the bear minimum set-up.

Google search for more ram for your laptop, But im sure laptop ram is expensive. Save your cash and buy a pc or a mac book they are good for music software.

When you use fruity loops in the bar at the top it should tell you the CPU usage, if this hits the top it makes the track stutter or go all funny or in some cases even make the software crash.

Get more ram that should solve the problem,

1) What sound card are you using? Putting a higher latency in the ASIO driver might help.
2) That's not enough ram if you're using alot of samples and VSTs
3) It could be a number of other things - what kind of CPU usage % are you getting? VST use is mostly dependent on CPU.

i tested it by just loading a default template and loading one sample and playing just that one sample, no vsts or anything. this makes me think it could be a soundcard problem? ill try that latency thing. im gonna have to wait till january sales and get a proper machine i think
