Because i'm only contracted part-time so as are most of my mates, our schedules conflict.

One of my friends suffered the opposite, he was persuaded to work overtime and do 12 hour shifts at his supermarket job especially when they were short of staff and for some bizarre reason the HR manager was not allowed to employ new staff. He had to work 6 days a week for a couple of weeks. Now its more organised so he only has to do afternoon and evening shifts about 5 days a week, he is full time.
Its good to be in a job where you have a lot of friends or the staff are overall very friendly and pleasant. It makes the job much easier and enjoyable. I enjoy my part-time job because I get on well with every single person, obviously there are some I get on well with much more than others and others I hardly speak to, but when you have over 30 staff at the place then you get to know some better than others.
I guess you cannot work for free overtime because it must be against the law, the company could get prosecuted if they knew one of their staff was earning nothing while working extra hours. How much is overtime anyway at your work compared to your normal hourly rate of pay if they are quite desperate to cut the budget?
