new to production, looking at buying a synth, is it necessary to buy one or can it all be done in cubase/fruity loops etc.. if they are needed what sort of thing should i get?

You don't need a Hardware Synth these days. You will want some software synths if you choose not to get one though and a midi keyboard is very useful.
Sylenth 1 and V Station are both very good. They're what I use most of the time. Nexus is also very useful but it's a Rompler and not a Synth. You can't actually create sounds on it but it has some excellent samples.

you can draw out sequences on the sequencer within cubase etc. but if you already have some experience playing a keyboard or piano I would definitely suggest getting some sort of midi controller. M-audio makes some pretty good ones.

Yea lol that takes ages, really hard to compose a good melody without a keyboard imo
