As I've said, there are ways that might approximate a clear a cappella and/or an instrumental, after substracting the spectrum of one file from another. The thing is, it rarely works, because for it to work, they would have to be of identical quality, dynamics, ambience etc. I was referring to the plain a cappella and/or instrumental, that you find on some single releases. But, of course, there are VSTs or effect plug-ins that might get you close to the desired effect. Nonetheless, these work in a way that render truncating some of the vocals/backing track unavoidable. It might not be that much noticeable in your own track that uses that kind of sample, after you have mixed it yourself, but still - it won't be a "complete cancellation" of vocals/backing track, and - from what I can see - that is what the OP was referring to :)
