Hi all...

Been listening to Hardcore now for around two years and have decided to give production a try. Thing is I'm completely naive on the subject and don't really know where to start so I was wondering if you lovely folks wouldn't mind giving me a little helping hand : )

Does anyone know of what free software I could use to start making tracks? Good tutorials for beginners? Also what software does what and the technical jargon.

Looking at it from the angle of trying to explain music production and how to do it to an alien who has just landed on earth. An Alien with very little money who is reliant on free and open source software.

Thank you all

Hiya mate first thing to realise is you're not going to make a quality track on your first attempt and that can be frustrating when you know how you want it to sound, but you just cant get there. You have to expect that the first few are going to be pretty awful, but thats the great thing because it can be so much fun learning.
Its gonna take a while for you to learn the programs you decide to use and then there is all the theory behind music and production.

I would suggest not to think about any of that. Just get yourself some programs to use and jump in head first. Start playing around making beats, then mess around and put a bass to it and so forth. After a while you will start wanting to know more and thats when you can read up and start experimenting.

You have'nt said if you have any musical knowlege, ie playing piano, because thats one massive advantage to have in production. If you have a basic knowledge of music theory everything wont seem so alien to you.

Check out computer music magazine, its great for knowledge of production but it also comes with tons of free programs to get you started off. Here's the website www.computermusic.co.uk

Hope this helps

Cheers for the reply mate.

I don't really come form a musical background so I'm coming into this pretty much at the deep end. I have started to study Music Theory and learn the concepts and structure of music online so that's being looked at.

Also I have just started to learn the Piano in preparation for music production.

I'm planning on going to college in September and learning Music Production and Technology, its just my love for music keeps giving me the urge to get my arse into gear and learn before hand.

Thats a good start mate. I learnt the piano when i was a child so it gave me a bit of an advantage when getting into production. If you have a basic understanding of scales, chords and progressions you will be much better off.

College is a good way to go, if not just to get your head round production and having somebody there to show you. I studied music technology about 10 years ago for 2 years at college. Its good to give you a basic understanding of producing but I didnt really start learning untill I got myself a setup and started messing around, making mistakes and gradually getting better.

Best of luck to you
