quote: I've been watching this entire thing from the beginning. Any and all PIFTS.exe threads were being deleted long before the spam. The deletion is what caused the spam. Anon made a thread on 4chan's /g/ forum, pointing out that the threads were being deleted. Some members came here and made legit threads inquiring about it which were also deleted. Every thread pertaining to the subject was deleted within minutes to seconds and the user accounts banned. In light of this behavior, it caught the attention of /b/ and that's when several people from there raided and the spam attacks began. Since the mass censorship and banning is what provoked the spam, it cannot be used as an excuse for all the deletions and bannings that occurred prior to triggering said spam attack.
quote: Which is what I just said as well if you'd like to read my previous post :P. The spam is being used as a scapegoat/coverup tactic. It's quite dissatisfying to see how these underhanded techniques are being used on the "valued" customers. It seems like something as serious as PC-Security should be provided by a company that people can actually TRUST. The official statement does nothing but stir more distrust, in my eyes.
quote: Minutes after the update? Looking kind of lying there, Mr. Cole.
quote: Sure, this was not a 'conspiracy or cover-up' but it was a major PR ****up you should've handled better. Unfortunately I've started a thread already, please merge it if you can. You let the 4chan-s get the better of you, create a whole hullabaloo, how could you let that happen? It is incompetent, not only on the technical side, but even more on the PR side.
quote: Sorry for the double post, but I'd like to use a direct quote. This is taken from the official PR statement. "Symantec strictly adheres to its Norton Community Terms Of Service and does not delete postings unless they are in violation of these guidelines. Upon determining that our User Forums were being abused, Symantec began removing the spam posts." This is simply not true. Again, I must make this perfectly clear: The spamming came virtually a day after discussion of pifts.exe began on the symantec forums. Honest and polite questions were all deleted, and in some cases, user accounts with multiple participation in other topics not regarding pifts.exe were actually deleted. Please explain how your CUSTOMERS are in violation of symantec terms of service, by merely asking why the product has begun to act strangely? Please, read my first post if you'd like to hear the rest.
quote: Hah, I love how they deleted the content of your message. Lucky for me I got to read it before it was deleted. You basically told him all the things I've just been saying, and he suggested to pass the discussion on to here. You do, and then they delete what you wrote. Class. Pure class. I hope that all customers of symantec witness the abysmal customer service that has taken place here over the past few days and learn from it. Boycott this garbage. Sorry, Symantec. You have failed us.
quote: Also, might I point out another thing from the official statement: "The patch reached a limited number of Norton customers and has subsequently been pulled from further distribution". Is that so? If it was somehow necessary to "determine the amount of people who'd need upgrades" or whatever, why is it suddenly alright to pull it from further distribution? Either that or they ironed it out and have it running secretly on everyone's PC's now. None of this adds up. I demand answers. Read all of my posts, and decide for yourself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pifts.exe Theres nothing to explane really, either you believe Norton or you dont. I dont think there is, or will be any "evidence" against Norton. At least not anymore.

It's a really big PR f*ckup on Symantec's side.
Around 7PM Pacific time Monday quite a lot of users started receiving popups from their firewalls about a program called pifts.exe. So of course many went to the forums. But Symantec deleted all questions on forum regarding to pifts.exe and banned users after asking why their threads were deleted. This resulted in sites such as 4chan becoming aware and then they started spamming the Symantec forums. Then when that got under control they released a statement that blatantly lied, saying that all users were spammers. Oh yeah, they took over 12 hours to release that statement that maybe cleared up 1% of the issue.
And of course, this results in a shitload of FUD and conspiracy theories.
