A friend of mine brought a good point once, since Electronic music doesn't really "use" instruments, how are the songs written? Like, is the music actually written out on stanzas, or just created off the top of the head as the song goes along?

of course electronic music uses instruments! they're a bit more sophisticated than regular guitars and drums and all those silly thingamajigz, that's all. No, seriously , the awesome style we call Hardcore is not that separated from the traditional ways of music making. I for one, use a keyboard. This, connected through midi to my computer, lets me handle all the "virtual" instruments, simple as.
I have noticed though that many people starting out seem to have the misguided concept that you don't need to know how to play an instrument in order to produce. ok, you might get around drawing sequences on a DAW but in my opinion that'll only get you so far.

Well, when I mean "use instruments", I mean someone actually playing a drum set, guitar, etc. through the entire song. That was my friend's argument. I knew producers had to have some general knowledge on how to read music. I did percussion for 6 1/2 years, so I know how to read/count music. I just always wondered how Hardcore music was written...like sheet music where all the notes are written out on a stanza.

most people producing electronic music either draw out the patterns on their DAW or input a pattern through midi, which is what I prefer. all I do, for making hardcore, is set the tempo at about 150 bpm or so, switch on the click and start improvising. If I end up with a decent pattern I clean it up and raise the tempo. That's how a track usually starts off with me.

What is an instrument? It's something that makes sound, doesn't have to be physical... I'm sure when the electric guitar came out people bitched about that as well saying it's not a guitar...

I dont think anyone producing electronic music write it in scores, or sheet music, if thats what you mean
plus, there are sounds in electronic music that are impossible to describe with the traditional sheet music symbols

**edit** Rant:
this might be a little off subject but:
The subject annoys me because i had to put up with so much of that crap when i lived in america (amazing how in a country where open mindedness/freedom/libralness is preached, people can be so close minded about music still).
but needless to say, dance music does use actual instruments not just VSTi's in alot of the pieces of music that get big just like a stupid amount of rock music using aspects of dance music, so the initial argument is pretty much invalid, outdated and misinformed.
Music is Music, it doesnt matter how the end result was made. you wouldnt refuse to read a novel JUST because it was typed on a computer and not on a typewriter..
hense why britney spears gets to #1 with "womanizer" ...lady gaga ....this isnt music, yet it gets to #1?
examples of live dance music:
Pendulum (Drum N Bass)
see, take pendulum for instance...thats Drum n Bass - Dance Music, using dance beats + synthesizers - not rock...despite the fact they use guitars
Chicane (Trance)
i'll post some more in a bit, but yeah - they need to drop the ignorance :) bet they call it all "techno" too lol

had to laugh at the 64 bit sample part : P
I've yet to hear a 64 bit kick drum, or a 64 bit CD for that matter.

why is it that girls seem to insist they can sing? you get really chavy girls walking round and on bus's singing with earphones in their ears with their chav'y friends, and you can just tell they LOVE the sound of their own voice SO HARD... and they seem to think EVERYONE wants to hear them and EVERYONE is sitting there thinking "wow, what an amazing voice"

Even the ones that CAN sing don't necessarily have a voice that I would enjoy listening to. She could have perfect pitch and diction and have a horrible, whiny, nasal voice that completely ruins it.

Some people are amazing musicains. Styles is classically trained in the piano. Force & Styles used a real Guitar in Heart Of Gold, Styles used a real guitar in Save Me, Come Running etc. Not everything is made using synths.
As for how they are written, i cant say this is the same for everyone, but i write the lyrics and melody (or get sent them if i use a song writer), and then build the track around those. The bits we write first sometimes get changed later on in the making of the track as well.
