I've tried, tried and tried again, but as much as I try, I can't seem to be able to make a kick sound as if it's the main part of a track. It always seems to get shrouded behind other sounds.
I've attempted compressing, dual compressing, tri band compressing, quad band compressing, limiting it, limiting other layers, Eq's, levelling. The whole shops been bought out but nothing works. Anyone got any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
I'm using Fruity Loops and basic mastering plugins. Any ideas or technical advice will be welcomed with a cyber kiss. no joke. :)

If you mixdown is good you shouldnt have problems like that.. Make sure nothings drowning out the kick and make sure the kick is the loudest in the mix.. Or turn everythign out down and leave the kick where it is.

I suppose it could be that your just using the wrong sounding kick. From what your saying though it sounds more like a compression or EQ problem. Maybe the frequencies are being occupied by your other sounds. One trick I've learned is to make sure your kick is on a mono channel, that might help bring it out a bit.

Kick should always be in mono, and just about all kick samples are in mono.
Same with the sub layer of basses, should be in mono.

make sure the kick cuts through BEFORE you start the mixdown. If this isn't happening then you still haven't found the right kick for the job. also, mixdowns shouldn't be a plug-in fest. You should get the sounds right during the arrangement and do minor tweaks where needed, on the way to the final version.

Actually i'd say your problem is either just that your kick is too loud/everything else is too loud
or
You need to round the bottom end off of everything else. Helps a lot.

no joke, but have you tried the volume faders?
I find my most powerful tool for mixing is just pulling volume down. I use a little EQ to clean up some sounds (unless its a brutal 15dB boost for a particular effect).
Also try reducing clutter by cleaning up delays and reverbs. You don't need reverbs that go on for 10seconds or delays that bounce around for hours. Less is more when mixing. What I do sometimes is put on quite a bit of reverb on my leads so its noticeable in the mix but with a short tail. Sometimes I use two different reverbs stacked on top of each other to achieve a different effect.
I keep my master fade at 0dB and make sure it never goes in the red - this itself is a challenge when trying to mix. If you start hit red or limiting on the master bus, you're not mixing right imo.
Of course, nothing beats getting the rick kick to start off with. If you have a flabby kick to start off with, then if you pull all the faders down, it will just be a loud flabby kick.
You might want to try tightening up the kick by shortening the tail, picking it up very slightly or some nice drum compression. Or even a mix of all 3.
I can't really give you much more specific because I haven't what you're working on, but feel free to send me a PM and I'll be able to give you some more indepth advice
