Ok, so i've recently got myself a DVS (mp3 Vinyl Emulation) system to mix my tunes with, so i have started to buy mp3s and WAVs for mixing with the occasional vinyl purchase.
I would prefer vinyl tbh but im not exactly made of money. So, i'm just wondering now. How do producers / labels make the most money on releases per unit? Do they gain more profit from Vinyl, mp3 or WAV releases? Id prefer to buy vinyl as ive said but moneys tight atm so i opt for WAV when the option is open to me and 320 mp3 as a last digital resort and vinyl if digital isnt available. But i'd like to buy the format which the producers / labels will benifit the most from per unit, so anyone have any ideas what that would be?

Vinyl must be more exspensive to produce and take ££ away from profit
Just a guess though lol

Aye i know that, i mean for single units i cant buy hundreds of copies of a track lol. If a digital file can never go out of stock then obviously it will accumilate more over an extentended period of time but i mean per unit which makes for th emost profit.

Aye, that's what i was thinking mate, but then i thought what about cost of pressing, sleeves distribution etc. Vinyl seems like a very costly option if things dont go smoothly IE the records fly off the shelves which sadly is often the case. But then a maximum (as far as i've seen) of £2.00 can be earned per unit for a digital release, providing its a WAV, but then most Hardcore records sell for about £5 so is there much difference?

Most hardcore records sell for £5 now days...is that all
14/15 years ago i was paying £7 to £12 sometimes more lol...they where imports though
i suppose if you think about it...its probably just the same profit for each
but more chance in profit loss if the vinyls dont sell as planned, as you mentioned

http://www.juno.co.uk/uk-hardcore/eight-weeks/?show_digital=0 Scroll down a bit. Average price for UK Hardcore £5-7. Most Gabber i think sells for about £7-8 but that's, i guess, down to the import costs or Euro conversion rates or whatever (i have no idea ). Yeah i assume it's pretty much the same when taking into account vinyls overheads, but i would much rather a vinyl copy of my favourite tunes over digital.

i spoke recently about this with an established dj as i was interested to know if vinyl still sells.
He makes abit off vinyl but not on the same level as back in the day, fink he mentioned that he shifts around 600 per release.
He said that he makes absolutely fook all of digital that's why hes reluctant to release it.

its either cd or digital releases. vinyl is quite expensive to press.. ive done it quite a lot and i will keep doing it. thing is.. u pay (taking the median out of prices) roughly ~13 euro (bout 9 quid?) for a vinyl to press.. guess u gotta buy faking large amounts nd really selll them to make profit.. imho its better to get digi releases.. web is reachable for almost anyone and its just 2 mouseclicks away from the buyer.. dont need to drive to (perhaps) rain .. or few faking miles which might cost ya gasoline. just peacefull at home (well.. not in all households but that aside..) bam.. click ur done.. :) and if the user wants.. just let it press on some dub record.. which is cheaper then real vinyl hehe ^^

And that's what they retail for.
Remember that retailers have to make their own money, and they usually get the best benefit out of selling vinyl.
Seriously only about 2 of those pounds are going back to the label, which means only one is going back to the artist/s

Hey,
Vinyl mate, if you're doing well with the vinyl and selling around 500 units (which is alot), you'll be making quite a bit.. but it all depends, all expenses must be covered by the revenue before anyone gets paid a split from the sales revenue.
Digital on the other hand can be pretty good as well! Whilst i probably can't tell you how many unit's im selling, the label is much better than i, (and everyone else i'd show my plans etc) antipated.
Vinyl is big business though, promotion is definitely key, and quality control is very high considering how much you'll spend per release. You gotta organise and worry about vinyl cutting, mastering, artwork, contracts, adding up all your expenses, alot of accounting, tracking money, emails, emails, phone calls...
It's all worth it! I respect all the vinyl labels in Hardcore for pushing the Hardcore and supporting it!

well blame the inferior sounds of mp3s and people's reluctance to buying anything that's just more than "sounds"
Music is Music people, not something you need to set a needle on :)

May I inquire how the filesharing aspect was inserted to that?
But it's nice to see someone, just like Lethal Theory, that doesn't just nag about the negative aspect of digital sales and tells us it actually does sell... or did you set a very low bar?

I don't think everyone read your question properly. ;)
As an artist you should be making at least half of any digital sales and probably around £1 per record for vinyl. It is also worth considering that vinyl will have 2-4 tracks on it. So if you’re buying more that one track digitally that's on the vinyl then the producer is definitely making more profit on a single sale basis.
Obviously vinyl is going to make the most overall profit for each release as sales still dwarf digital sales despite the recent decline.

to force a vinyl t sell more, should they pur more a-sider releases on each vinyl?...
Hell yea!! If I where to buy vinyls, I'd prefer to buy as few as possible.
And then release the b-siders digitally :)
