How did you get into music, period, and what did you listen to before getting to what you listen to now?
I was thinking about it, and I want to know how people got into listening to music, and what they used to listen too.
Of course, I know, most answers will probably be like mine. Because of my parents.
They used to play music all the time around the house, and my brother is 6 years older then me. And I listened to what he listened to most of the time.
Growing up in Detroit the most I heard growing up was Rock n Roll. Then as the years passed by, my brother started listening to Rap, and R & B. I used to listen to just what my brother did growing up, and only in the past 4 years or so I actually started listening to other things besides Rap.
I started out going from Rap to Old School Rock, Punk Rock, etc. And everything kind of "evolved" and I was looking for something to listen too. Then I stumbled upon, what I called then, Techno.
I didn't start listening to Electronica since like...a year ago? And the first piece of music I listened to, that got me into it, was from the Blade movie (Phat Bass - Warp Brothers Vs Aquagen).
And from there I started listening to the obvious stuff. Tiesto, Darude, etc. And from there I started listening to other genre's. Eventually coming to what I listen to now, which is a lot of Electronica, still listen to Rap and R&B, and I get into a lot of rock as well.
And I know those lucky people out there that have listened to some form of Electronic most of their lives, but I'm not one of them.
I know there's been threads before about "What got you into Hardcore". But from the time I've been on here I haven't seen one asking people their transition of music they've listened to from the beginning, to present day.

I started listening to hardcore just under 2 years ago via Darren Styles after hearing a few clubland tunes round my mates house and youtube'd styles and the rest was history.
Before hand i listened to pretty much anything but after hardcore now being my fav. genre and listening to R&B etc i now release R&B is s**t, jus about whoares going down on "wana be ganstas" making out there hard and bullet prove.
Hardcore is a genre like no other, IT FCUKING MENTAL, it may be a small scene compared to Trance/Techno but its one amazing genre to be proud of and keeping blasting out of your stereo day in day out!

I got into Hardcore about 1-2 yrs ago. It was kinda a mishap actually:P
I was trying to get a Hardstyle album, and it ended up being a Hardcore album:P and i fell in love with it.
Before Hardcore i listened to (in order):
1. Rap (i was stupid back then)
2. Punk Rock
3. House
4. Trance
5. Speedcore
6. Splittercore
7. Hardstyle
that was it !!

started listening to 80's music through my parents, then my dad started listening to TTF etc and from there my mate gave me a copy of bonkers on tape. got into 'happy harcore' til about bonkers 6 then thought i had to 'grow up' and started listening to trance, had a spell in rap then found bonkers 8 while i was still listening to rap, then realised hardcore was the way ahead have listened to it since. but am now listening to hardstyle, gabba etc trying to expand my tastes a bit.

No such thing.
Especially if you're married. And god forbid you have children.

well aside from the fact that my dad was a music teacher..
i think it works a bit differently in england - due to the fact dance music is played pretty much everywhere you go so you're effected by your surroundings much more, you walk into any cd store and it has a big section called "Dance" then thats split up into dance compilations, you walk into a clothes store its playing over the speakers, you watch tv its used on tv programs, as theme tunes, on commercials blah blah blah..i mean christ - my mum knows what dance music is and can name off a load of dance artists and shes really no different to any mom i met in the states, difference is dance music is underlaying most things in the UK...when you're young you just pick up on the type of music you like from whats being played around you...
so from the moment i can conciously remember remembering (if that makes sense) i guess if i had been in the mid-west USA i would have been listening to rock and country on the radio..but i was listening to radio one UK top 40, Dave Pierce Dance Anthems followed by "The Mix at Six"....it was like being thrown a load of different styles of music at once and from that i picked out what i liked D-ream, Baby D, Perfecto Allstars, 2 Unlimited, Capella, Reel2Reel....(the clubland of the early 90's?)
which of course was followed up with the big compilations that were out at the time
(On A Dance Tip, The Best Dance Album in the world ever...(part3 i started at i think), Dance Zone Level 4, 5 etc, Dance Mania (not replay)

of course, back then the UK only had 4 national TV Channels (unless you were al posh and could afford sky (satellite) and all the albums above (and more, got national tv commercials) so i guess in a big way advertising was the one thing that introduced me to more music)
from these albums it was just expanding from there...then i heard Hardcore Heaven Vol1 whilst on holiday in the lake district in 1996 (where i now live, talk about full circle!)
so thats how i came across hardcore...then i went to holland a few years later picked up "Happy 100" which was a nice dose of dutch happy (Cixx, Mindtrust etc etc)
then trance got big in england in 99/00 and MOS released the only two good albums they ever have (Clubbers guide to trance (mixed by ATB) and Trance Nation (black and orange, mixed by ferry corsten)...bought another great cd whilst i was on holiday in Germany The Year of Trance 2000 Midsummer Power Mix...lots of good trance..
then i finally got the internet...to be honest the internet didnt really help me find much new music..least not half as much as some people i know...(this thread has just become question of the week, cause its a good one! :) )

well when i was like 5-6 years old i mostly listened to Enya lol.. and abit later i listened to some 90s dance music and diffrent pop shit until i was like 12-13 and started listning to trance. Then when i was 14 i discovered happy hardcore like discoland, stuff like the happy hardcore albums and early bonkers stuff. then i started listning to more hardcore like bonkers 9, 10 etc, and old skool hardcore i guess around 15-16, liked the freeform and the old skool the most around 17 years old. then i began to get into jungle and drum n bass, i guess couse of all the breaks in old skool and some freeform. and ye also listnin to all kinds of other shit like diffrent house, psy trance, trance, chill out etc. around 18-19 started listning to hip hop aswell, only quality old skool and underground stuff. So ye now i listen to all this shit mostly drum n bass tho hehe.

When i started properly listening music it was punk rock (still listen it) and eurodance (still listen it), going from Eurodance to HHC was a natural step due to the similarities of the 2 genres. From HHC later moved on to UK Hardcore, Gabber, Makina and JHardcore (still listen all of those). In the middle have and still do listen many other genres, but not in the same volume as these genres (hardcore and eurodance take up of over 80% of the records ive bought)
