FASTRAXX THE 2009 INTERVIEW / Q&As

Where did it all start for you?
Got a pair of belt drive decks when I was about 14 with a few vinyl we used to have practice sessions every week at 3 different locations then just got into the scene so quickly and passionately after that going to many raves at Howden. Floral Hall, the Adelphi(porterhouse Retford before that) and pleasuredome and of course Donny Warehouse every week. Became a massive fan of Fantazia in 1993 which took me into the scene even more.

Where did the name come from?
‘Fastraxx’ came from just iniatially playing hardcore which was fast and I just came up with it and stuck to it. ‘Hyperbeatz’ is the name of our main record label and we mainly get booked under our label name to play old skool events but not always – it was mainly for Dizstruxshon nights.

What gave you the initial push?
I would say Jonny as we would both DJ then he got a keyboard learned how to play it,he then bought rave EJAY started making his own tunes which were good and I thought I want a go at this so we both got our heads together and started playing back to back sets.

Who would you say was putting on the best events at the moment?
The obvious ones are HTID, HH, Uproar etc but I gotta give credit to the 2 biggest nights around here – Dizstruxshon + Uprising as it’s always a quality night.

Which other countries have you played?
New York City in the USA was amazing and we have been promised a return gig there, would like to play spain and other countries too.

What was the first event you ever played?
I think the 1st one I ever did was an illegal outdoor rave at ashby ville in ***-be about 1995,flyers gave out the same day, a few hundred people,1 or 2 acre field and was good until the police turned up later to close it but we had about 4 or 5 hours before they turned up. Was a great experience to say the least.

What’s the best event you’ve ever played?
Global Energy 2008 was really good but I think dizstruxshon NYE 2005 was the best because of the rush of playing in front of thousands of people in the dome – and we had the midnight set it was awesome. For the experience it would have to be Candyball 7 in New York USA – absolutely amazing.

What was your first record you bought?
Altern8 – Infiltrate 202

Out of all the tunes you have, which one does the business every time?
Brisk + Trixxy – Eyeopener

What's your favourite tune of all time, the ultimate classic?
There’s so many but I will say ‘Bass Reaction – Technophobia’

And when all the partying is over, how do you like to relax?
Plenty of sleep, strong coffee when I get up then chill out and watch the footy.

How is the scene in your eyes at the moment?
The scene is massive globally and is maybe the biggest it has ever been especially on the commercial front which ain’t really a bad thing because it will always be hardcore and underground just in so many different ways.

How big is your vinyl collection? What is your opinion on CDJ's? (the pros & cons)
Not counted but would say about 1500-2000 easy. Really like cdj’s mainly because you can play your own tracks to see how they go down so there is no initial outlay not like the days of dub plates – although I still love vinyl it just seems so much easier with cdj’s but can’t beat a good session on the 1210’s.

The funniest thing that ever happened at an event?
Could be at Ravers in the emporium – the sound tech was stood next to us whilst we were playing main stage, an mc wanted the mic to go louder so in the middle of our set the sound tech guy switched off the decks, lights whole lot to reset the mixer. I don’t think many people realised and thought we just stopped the track but we couldn’t believe it but laughed about it afterwards.

Other DJs you rate?
Scott Brown, Gammer, Robbie Long, Brisk, Kutski there are so many really. For old school it’s got to be 007 and Eazy D + Rush every time.

Who is/are your biggest musical influences in the world of music & why?
Scott Brown is a massive influence we just love his sound but Dave Devastate for his music knowledge and production skills and simply people just don’t realise how many tracks this guy is affiliated with – genius.

What are your feelings on the MC's?
I like MC’s as they get the crowd going but they need to know when to mc on a track and when not to.

What do you do outside of the dance music scene?
I have a full time job, I have twin girls, a great and patient girlfriend, I like to try and keep fit but don’t get the chance at the minute. Also a massive Man United fan since about 4 years old so enjoy watching them and other footy on the telly.

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Mc's/Promoters?
For dj’s I would say get into writing your own tracks as early as possible as it is not easy but gets you known in the scene but hand out demo cd’s mix cd’s to promotors. For MC’s I would say pass a cd on but don’t try and cram as many lyrics in as you can just be sensible-listen to the top mc’s for when they mc on a track etc. For up and coming promotors just try and start with local dj’s then start adding a few bigger names later-time and time again people book too many big names on small nights and theyr’e just not pulling the numbers in.

If you could stage an event anywhere, where would you choose?
A Caribbean island

How do you see the scene 5 years from now?
The scene will always progress and in 5 years time I think there will be more artists making music and maybe more events happening-on a global scale too. It would be better if more compilations were around.

If you had a time machine what year would you go back to and why?
I would go back to 1993 when I 1st started going to raves and the scene was exploding with jungle techno ,happy hardcore and bouncy techno we had sets by Dougal + Carl Cox, and Dwarf, Babyboom and Bonzai were the most played records.

I would get into producing at an earlier age but I wouldn’t change how messy I got at the raves haha!!

Any shouts you would like to make?

To all my friends and the ravers + promotors who have supported us in the scene , big shouts especially go to Dave Devastate + Bri Topgroove.
