THE DJ PRODUCER 2009 INTERVIEW FOR US / Q&As

I thought now would be as good a time as ever, to ask a few questions to some of the mainstay & popular figures in our scene, see what their angle is & what makes them tick.

THE DJ PRODUCER..

Where did it all start for you?

Probably after seeing the video for herbie hancocks "Rockit".
Seeing grandmaster dst cutting, just made me want to get turntables and scratch like that :)

Where did the name come from?

I was actually given the name "Producer" as (apparently),when Dj'ing i "Produced the goods"....As there was a guy making record (only one mind) under the name "The Producer" (back in 92), i changed my name to "The Dj Producer" for the universe gigs.

What gave you the initial push?

Basically knowing i was as good (or better??) than half the dj's i was hearing at the time.

Who would you say was putting on the best events at the moment?

In uk, Ravers Reunited, HTID, Twisted and Brainfire, BangFace, Oblivion, Oxygen In Europe Club R_aW, Abused Musick, Raving Nightmare, Prspct, .....Theres really 2 many in europe to choose from :)

Which other countries have you played?

USA (New york, L.A., C.A), France, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, and Australia (With all european destinations visited on a very regular basis)

What was the first event you ever played?

Probably at a night run by a freind when i was at college at the end of 1989

What’s the best event you’ve ever played?

Ive probably played at more than 1000 events by now......Hard to pick one, But the Universe gigs back in 1992 - 1993 were monumental in making my name, and then the Thunderdome gigs in 2001 and 2007 in Holland were just mind blowing full stop....We dont see 25 -- 40,000 people at events in UK very often :)

What was your first record you bought?

Blondies "Heart of glass". I was 7 years old, and bought it with 1 and 2p pieces i had saved up :)

Out of all the tunes you have, which one does the business every time?

Everything i drop does the business. Otherwise i would be OUT of business :)

What's your favourite tune of all time, the ultimate classic?

Zeniths "Flowers of intelligence" on IST Records, US, always did damage -- over a 10 year period.......

And when all the partying is over, how do you like to relax?

By doing as little as possible.

How is the scene in your eyes at the moment?

I see the "Scene" in different countries......I think its getting better in uk......a lot is going on in holland......and im doing more in italy now since the "Frenchcore" sound is really getting recognition out there.......

How big is your vinyl collection? What is your opinion on CDJ's? (the pros & cons)

I am 125% vinyl junkie. FACT. I have about 15,000 records left (after culling about 6,000 out of my collection in 2002), But fact of the matter is.....Its all about cd now. I get the bulk of what i play from the artists direct, what i dont get fromn them, i do all the usual d.load sites and get LEGALLY. If i cant get it from these channels -- i cant get it, and moreover -- i wont have it. Anyone djing and making money at it, and using illegals d.load sites, in my opinion frankly needs a good kicking.......However u look at it.....your stealing from the artist....and as an artist myself, its important to do it the right way......i have to live with my own concience .....and mine is CLEAR :)

The funniest thing that ever happened at an event?

I dont do funny :)

Other DJs you rate?

Not being a snob, but most guys just "play records" now. i like to have something to look at, a touch of performance....the last guy i saw who really made me think WOW was a techno dj from london by the name of Jeff Amadeus.....3 turntables (NOT cdj's) effortlessly in sync....and fast deconstruction and re-construction...Just awesome to watch :)

Who is/are your biggest musical influences in the world of music & why?

Frankie Bones, Lenny Dee (Actually a really good freind now) Joey beltram -- and the detroit connection -- Kevin saunderson, Juan Atkins and Derrick may.....Without these 6 dudes i would have less education of where this music came from....And at the start of 1990 -- these guys told it how it was.....Listening to these guys records was like attending a masterclass.......

What are your feelings on the MC's?

I feel them when they work WITH me. I do NOT feel them when they talk too much :

What do you do outside of the dance music scene?

Being a record producer, and working gigs in uk and mainland europe means this is a full time occupation.....ive lived this for 19 years this year.....My life IS the dance music scene......

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Mc's/Promoters?

Keep on keepin on :) Dont take no for an answer. Do this for love - not money.

If you could stage an event anywhere, where would you choose?

I wouldnt. Im a dj --NOT a promoter :)

How do you see the scene 5 years from now?

I cant , and wont predict the future. The future is not set except that which we make for ourselves.

If you had a time machine what year would you go back to and why?

Back to 1989 to do Acid house all over again :) :) :)

Any shouts you would like to make?

I can shout louder than anyone :) Big up all UK promoters and dj's that know me, Big up all Europeans that care enough to book me on a monthly basis......And big up all the ravers worldwide that Keep me in the minds eye. And big up My agents who put up with all the shit that i throw at them.....I love you guys :) :)
