For example, lets use Serious Sounds
Does any of the money go towards the artist/label? Or does it all go towards the site to keep it in function?

some sites keep a part of the money for themselfs to cover the expenses for like paying the server nd domain name fee nd stuff.. paying the lisences to distribute music for artists/labels. its a small fee payed per track.. the rest goes towards the artist/label.. how thats sorted out on the label depends on the policies of that specific label in question :) its obvs that artists get payed from it somehow.. although with the mp3 prices its not that much... better then nuffin still :) music aint a goldmine these days!

If the site gave no profits to the artist/label then that would be equal to filesharing.

There are always dividends/percentages that go toward the label which is then (in most cases), cut for royalties for the artist.
IMOdownload only take 30% , most others take 50%.

From trackitdown, the label/artist ends up receiving 33% of the selling price per mp3
From Juno label/artist gets about 40% of selling price per mp3
From IMO the label/artist gets about 66% of the selling price per mp3
The rest of the cut goes to MCPS, payment handling fees and the host website

i hear beatport is one of the worst. they have a monthly charge for having your songs on there, and on top of that they keep a percentage of sales. so if you don't sell a song, then you are basically out $$$
