"This occurred yesterday (1/12) and the news outlets have been covering it. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the nation of Haiti, and is believed to have killed thousands. The exact toll is not known as numbers as high as 100,000 have been given by the government.
Many organizations who were stationed on the island providing aid for the poverty-stricken country were also severely impacted.
The government reports that the UN Mission in Haiti has killed 14 employees and the UN mission chief is believed to be among those. The catholic archbishop for Haiti was also killed.
The death toll is compounded by Haiti's poor infrastructure. Many people live in shanty towns and old structures which can easily collapse under an earthquake. It also makes it even more difficult to deliver aid, on account of what little infrastructure there is to transport goods has been wrecked. It is believed that the main prison in Port-Au-Prince was destroyed and its inmates are now on the streets.
This earthquake already comes on the massive political and economic instability in Haiti. Haiti's government is among the most corrupt and ineffective in the world. There are issues with mass exploitation by corporations. Economic conditions have already driven many people to the US in previous decades.
As mentioned previously many aid organizations were already there addressing a recent wave of famine across the small nation, but are now asking for both more volunteers/ employees, material, and money to deal with this issue. The US already had a mission en route to the nation to help with the instability, but its mission is now retooled to a relief one. A detachment of marines will also be sent. The UK and Venezuela are also going to send their share of aid, as well as a number of smaller contributions by other nations."

Wow, that was a very powerful finish by Olbermann on that one. Really, really on point tho. Its kinda nuts to hear how some people can actually say some nasty things and mean it =/
