What antivirus program were you running? If you have screencaps of the popup error messages you're talking about, that would be helpful. Also, if you want something free that's pretty decent, download AVG antivirus. Scan everything. Last resort: backup your important files, either reinstall Windows or format your hard drive. After, I'd suggest using a different browser. For spyware, you can get Spybot Search & Destroy for free and it works wonderfully.

As well to what DJ Lawlzy said try using Malwarebytes and Avast! (Boot up scan), both of the free editions are GREAT and one of the bests for free which actually beat a lot of the pay for ones.

Try doing a system restore too: Systems and Maintenance > Back up your computer > Restore Files > Choose Restore Date and pick the one farthest back to hopefully avoid the XP Defender infection all together.

Backup files -> Format C:\ -> Install XP/7

Windows should actually be reinstalled every year or two due to various reasons. Whenever someone ****s up their computer beyond repair (or beyond getting it fully back to normal) thats the only real solution. Everything else is just giving CPR to someone that needs life support.

This, if you're just terrible at keeping a computer clean. I back up my files on the computer weekly, or if I do something really important, daily.

Also skip XP, and install Vista/7. Vista ISN'T bad, Windows 7 is built off the same base of Vista, just the GUI is different. Bad marketing is what gave Vista a bad rep in the first place and is why so many people hate Vista without even using it to it's true advantages.

If you are going to re-install though, just get Seven as the GUI is better then Vista's IMO, but it isn't more powerful at the base level. XP is getting it's support cut, and you will be running short on everything new coming out from Microsoft like Internet Explorer 9, which will be on Vista and Seven exclusively.

Plus all of your old XP Programs can run on Vista/Seven fine, and if it can't natively you can through Vista: Right Click > Properties > Compatibility Mode > XP or Seven: XP Mode. Internet Explorer 9 can't run in XP mode by the way, but you'd be using outdated, unsupported, unsecured technology.

Actually i dont know any company that switched to Vista, because it sucks. These are computers built and maintained by professionals. At school (computer tech support) they teached that one should never use Vista and they went to lengths to explain why, cant remember anymore why, cause didnt really have any need to use it in the first place. Also Vista mimics XP to run older programs, 7 (not the home version) has an XP virtual PC preinstalled. Microsoft had to prolong XP support various times, cause companies refused to use Vista. And eventually they gave an option to downgrade to XP, a 7 year older OS. Though i'm sure in regular home use, the downfalls of Vista arent that much of an issue.

Also for older computers its irrational to install a heavier OS. For new computers 7 (for the reasons you said), for old ones XP.

:D

Lorenzo let peek around inside his system last night. Turns out that his brother handed it over to him, and his brother apparently wasn't very computer-literate; it's filled with loads of malware besides just XP Defender. We were able to get rid of XP Defender, but... yeah.

I should also note that he's not up for doing any reinstalling of the OS. He is getting a new computer of his own at the end of summer though.

Windows installation is made for end user. With simple instructions anyone can do it really IMHO (assuming you know at least how to install stuff to a computer). The only part newbies don't realize is to do the prework beforehand (search all necessary drivers, security software and stuff to make it up and running before you plug it into the internet after installation).

I know, I'm just respecting his wishes. Hopefully his install of windows will actually last until then lol.

I've seen many Gnome and KDE games that have become far more bloated over time with every update to them.
